{2011} i have been waiting for you.
i can understand why new year's is a tradition that a lot of people take the time to embrace and celebrate. a new year brings the chance to start fresh, to put last year in the past and have a brand spankin' new, squeaky clean slate. it offers the opportunity to set some goals for yourself (realistic or not) and try your darndest to be your {best self}...which for me, is more important then all the bells and whistles, all the dressing up and dolling up, all the where to go and what to do.

one thing i know is true, is this new years is going to be a very special one. it marks the end of one of the best years of my life-a healthy year, a happy year; a year of growing and changing into the woman i am today, and am proud to be. who am i kidding? i'm far from a woman, maybe young lady is more appropriate. ok, i'm not much of a lady either. maybe girl? i'll stick with girl.

i struggled to come up with a resolution that works for me and i can actually accomplish, but i decided i'm not going to tell myself to get in shape or volunteer more of my time. {my resolution} is to keep working on becoming the woman i long to be. to be thankful for all of the wonderful people i am surrounded by, to appreciate all that my life has to offer and maybe more importantly then that-to stop and breathe it all in.

tonight we are celebrating with some special friends. sadly not all of them, but that doesn't mean it's any less special. i hope for those far and wide, that this new years is as special for you, as it will be for me.

2011: you're so close i could spank you, and that makes me giddy as a school girl. happy new years! to you and yours.

why have one emcee?
when you can have two.
choosing who would be our emcee for the wedding was something that took a lot of thought and consideration. we knew we wanted someone who would keep our guests laughing and entertained, someone who would make the evening flow smoothly and someone we could count on.

one afternoon, paul and i started talking about who would best fill the shoes as our emcee. we felt like the lucky person we called our {master of ceremonies} should be someone who knows us well-separately and as a couple. then one day it clicked, and i was almost blown away by how blind i had been to not think of it sooner.

"what about lindsay?"

yes. lindsay my hair stylist. lindsay who asked me to be her maid of honour. lindsay my dear lindsay. she would be perfect! she is organized, creative with her words, reliable and absolutely hilarious. and at the risk of sounding vain, she reminds me a lot of myself-so it will be like sitting back and watching myself up at the podium (wow that sounded more smug then i intended. but it's true).

as if having lindsay master the ceremony wasn't enough, we had another trick up our sleeve. lindsay could easily do the job on her own, but why not give her a partner in crime? someone she can feed off of, and vice versa. someone who is quick on their feet, doesn't mind speaking in front of our crazy family and friends and loves a little (or a lot) of attention. that's when we thought of chris.

yes. chris, paul's brother in law. chris who got married in august and blew my hair back with his speech. chris our dear chris. he has been in paul's life longer then i have and has been there since day one of our relationship. he understands how paul works and will be able to push his buttons without causing his head to pop off. he also knows how i work....which is kind of scary, but fun at the same time.

we surprised the two by asking them to be our emcee's on the night of our christmas party. i put together a small package for each of them that included a toy microphone (so they have something to hold when they are practicing their speeches in front of the mirror) and a card with a poem that i wrote asking them to be a part of our wedding. they both {said yes} and have already started plotting their moment in the spotlight.

here's to hoping two heads are better then one.

{a christmas vacation celebration}
so totally wedding unrelated, this past saturday, paul and i hosted our first christmas party since we moved into our home a little over three years ago. my lovely century old victorian beauty was transformed into a christmas wonderland fit for a christmas party unlike any other christmas party seen ever before.

because {christmas vacation} is one of my all time favourite movies, we decided to host a christmas vacation themed/hideous christmas sweater/dirty moustache party and call it a "christmas vacation celebration". basically, our guests were asked either to dress like a character from the movie, or wear an ugly christmas sweater. and for the boys-a mandatory moustache policy was in effect (this was paul's idea).

we had 25 of our closest friends over to watch the movie, have some snacks, enjoy some eggnog and rum, partake in a competition for the best costume, sweater and moustache, and then top off the night with a dance party to some of our favourite christmas songs. it was the best party we have had in our home and went on into the wee hours of the morning.

i couldn't have asked for a better way to celebrate the christmas season then having my favourite people in the world, under my roof, dressed like randy quaid and dancing their little hearts out to "jingle bell rock".

"merry christmas! shitter was full!"

a year ago~he put a ring on it
it's our 1 year engage-aversary!
my, my, my how time flies.

a year ago today i hopped on cloud 9, and i haven't come down since. i still get butterflies when i catch a glimpse of my ring out of the corner of my eye, and i still get a crazy smile on my face when someone refers to paul as my "fianceeee".

we started this crazy journey with 18 months of planning, prepping and waiting ahead of us, and with less then 6 months to go, the excitement is almost too much for me to handle. i keep telling myself, "if i can get through a year, i can get through the last 5 months". and with all the fun things we have planned to do-the bridal shower, stag and doe, bachelor and bachelorette parties, rehearsal dinners and get together's for shits and giggles, i can't help but want to fast forward to the spring and get the show on the road!

with christmas so close you could spit on it, we don't have a big "to-do" planned for today. i think we'll have dinner in niagara on the lake at the {angel inn} of course, right back to where it all happened, and then head home for a the low key night in. dinner and a christmas movie sounds good to me.

my, my, my how time flies.

a very special guest: my pooch
pets at weddings?
i think i considered whether or not we would have our 3 year old pooch {india} as a part of our wedding for about 10 seconds before it was decided. it's a no-brainer, she's a part of our family and should be a part of our day. she's like our own little hairy child that loves us unconditionally and always puts a smile on my face.

she is part boston terrier and part jack russell terrorist-which makes her a hand full to say the least, but she is very good and listens well. we involved her in our engagement photos, and i was SO HAPPY that we did. she made the experience even more amazing for us, and is the reason we had some really cute pics. in fact, she almost stole the show!

i plan on making her a collar and leash with pearls and lace and hope to achieve something like this. (my god i love frenchies!)
Photobucket

{india} will be a part of the day while getting ready, she'll spend some time with the boys at their b&b and then and some time with the girls at our b&b. i plan on enlisting my bridesmaid cass (her and {india} have a special bond) to walk her down the aisle at the ceremony, once at the front she is going to hand her off to my uncle who will be sitting in the front row. after the ceremony, she will ham it up in the pictures with us, and then we'll kiss her adios as she won't be partying into the night with us (even though i want her too, paul had to draw the line somewhere-i would have her come with us on our honeymoon if it weren't for paul and his rational thinking).

am i the only crazy one that needs to have some pooch lovin' on the big day? hope not.

twelve months down~six to go
today marks 6 months until THE BIG DAY: holy shit!

i kept reminding myself of this all week-trying to make a mental note to wish the boy happy 6 months to go, but after a busy day, i didn't remember until right now.

ironically, this afternoon i had a few of my girlies meet me at the bridal salon i bought my dress aka "marilyn" from (yes i named my dress-even the girl at the salon said she had never heard of a girl naming her dress...what's wrong with me!?!) to show her to them as they hadn't seen it since it came in. i also have a friend from out of town staying with me for the weekend who hadn't seen her at all! it was nice to put it on again...i think i fall more in love with it every time.

lately i have felt like a lot of what needs to get done is done....but now that i know there are only 181 days to go.....i feel like i have a million things to do! i have lots of diy projects to get done, the girls need their dresses and the boys need their suits-even paul, we have agendas to make, favours to wrap, china to pick out.....and the list goes on and on until my brain starts to hurt.

no sense in stressing about it now. it's saturday night and we have some fabulous friends to meet up with (to celebrate with) beer that needs drinking and bad karaoke to thoroughly enjoy.

cheers to all the other june bug brides! 6 months babyyyyy!!!!

wedding hurr: blondes. brunettes. red heads.
who has more fun?
well if anyone can answer this, i guess it would be me. when one of your best friends is a hair stylist and has been using you as her own little guinea pig for the last 6 years-you don't really have a choice! lindsay has made me red, brunette, blonde, pink, plum and platinum. i've been high-lighted and low-lighted, chopped, trimmed, curled and straightened. it's not a wonder my hair hasn't completely fallen out of my head never to grow back.

but in the almost 12 full months that i have been engaged, i have been a simple sweet, warm chestnut brown; trimmed every 6 weeks and treated with lots of love. it's the healthiest and happiest my hair has ever been. even the girls at work have noticed and are convinced i could be a model for {john freida} "liquid shine" shampoo....and i like that.

since the first time i envisioned myself on my wedding day (sometime in the year 1991) i pictured my little dirty blonde self; a mix of summery blondes, down past my shoulders, softly curled all pretty and girlie-and paul agreed, but then again, he couldn't care less. however since cutting it short (super boy short) and going to the colour i am now, the boy has changed his tune. all of a sudden he has an opinion. "short and brown, not done up or curled, would be the best. and no make-up. you look prettier without make-up" he says.

well then. thank god i spend 99.9% of my time with my hair and make up done to the nines. i spend a lot of time putting on my face so that it doesn't look like i am actually wearing another face-and now he wants it naked on the big day? nope. not gonna happen. why don't i just throw on a pair of elastic ankle track pants to walk down the aisle in and call it a day?

once he confused me beyond comprehension, i began searching for pictures to inspire some sort of style for the wedding. i don't want the classic "bride hair" all shellacked and curled on top of my head, able to withstand a hurricane and 150 km winds. i will be wearing the fabulous set of custom hair extensions made by my friend neena, and want it pulled back but still soft, pretty, unfussed and purposely messy. i'll be a brunette for the boy-but i'm wearing make-up, that's for damn sure.

the girl in the photos i posted has my dream wedding hair (not to mention she is stunning!). i love how she wore the floral headpiece for the ceremony, and then went a little more casual for the reception. i love the twists and parts and the big bang that hangs so perfectly across her eye. i have a veil or two (and almost three) but am confident that lindsay can incorporate them, and will make me look like the bride i pictured back in grade one.

and for the record-those red heads are having some seriously spicy fun ;)

bridal lingerie:
you want me to wear what?
do yourself a favour and pop on "glory box" by {portishead} while reading this post. we have sexy things to talk about, and it'll help get you in the mood.

after spending a nice chunk of money on my wedding dress (ahhh thank you nonna!) i have now turned my search to what i will wear UNDER the dress. i never even considered this as something that needed figuring out, but after reading another blog about how excited the bride was to find "the perfect bridal lingerie" i started to think....what the hell am i going to wear?

i'm gonna let you in on amanda's secret. (move over victoria).

i'm not fussy. i don't care for straps and stay-ups, or corsets and thongs made of less material then an eye patch. i'm all about comfort-boy cut undies and pretty bras. but on this special day....i feel the ridiculous need to put my comfort on the back burner...and welcome the torture device that is wedding lingerie.

so far my search has turned up some horrendously scary images. really? a veil that covers your ass? no thanks. what's next? bird cage thongs and tushy tiaras? i'd rather slip into a pair of "sexy lil' bride" panties and call it a day.

considering my dress is so skin tight i probably won't have the room to even wear anything underneath. yet, i have managed to convince myself to take a special trip to {victoria's secret} to see what i can find. something that makes me happy, and something that will make the boy happy. although i could wear his boxers and his grandmothers bra that day, and he would still be happier then a pig in shit.

so the first item on the list is to make me look like a victoria secret model. and the second? find the balls to wear it.

giddy about the guys in grey
it certainly was a bit of a surprise to hear paul tell me a few months ago that he wants him and the boys to wear grey suits the day of the wedding. i had always pictured him in a classic black tux (but dreamed of him in a kilt), so when he mentioned the grey suits i quickly got over the tuxes. plus, i was able to get my "kilt fix" when he was a groomsmen in his friend pat's wedding last year.

yummy. my pasty white scottish boy in a kilt.

he has decided that he wants to wear a three piece suit-in that vintagey muted grey. he also wants to wear suspenders and probably a fun bowtie or skinny tie. i told him i felt like there may be too much going on, but itÂ’s probably for the best, as by the time the night is over, he'll be in nothing but his pants and suspenders with a beer in his hands.

the boys are going to be mixed and matched (just like the girlies) with either a vest, suspenders and dress shirt, or just a dress shirt. we like the idea of a combination of styles and will probably have them in a darker grey then paul.

these boys are going to look delicious; especially next to my sexy girls.

as for accessories-we have already purchased 3 pairs of socks for the groomsmen from {urban outfitters} and they are all hilarious. paul has dibs on the pink socks with squirrels on them. what a freak. i'm still shopping around online for pink patterned bowties-maybe a combo of 2 styles, and then other fun details like handkerchiefs, hats and belts.

i love dressing my one boy up....now i get to dress up 4 more!

the first dance:
who knew choosing a song would be so hard?
one of the first questions i like to ask a newly engaged couple is what song they are going to dance to at their wedding. i can respect when they don't know or want to keep it a secret, but when they do know and are willing to share, it always gives me goose bumps to hear what they have chosen and why. maybe it was the first song they slow danced together to, or a song that makes them think of a happy time they shared-or maybe they couldn't care less and chose the song the day before because they needed to choose a song. i still like to know why.

i truly love music and how it effects you-i don't care who is singing it or why they wrote it-if it can evoke an emotion: happy, sad or makes me want to dance my brains out then i will listen to it. i'm not one to put others down for the music they like, and don't slam a song or band because it's not my bag. i just like what i like and that's the end of that.

and with that being said...we are torn between 3 songs that i could easily see as the song we dance to, all for very different reasons.

because this is something that didn't really concern paul until i asked him to start thinking about it, he had no suggestions to help make this decision easier (my god i wish i was a male sometimes). for the longest time, i told him when we got married, i wanted our first dance to be to a song by {corrine bailey rae} called "like a star". it gives me goose bumps EVERY time i hear it, and her voice is just ridiculously pretty. if you haven't heard it, you have to.

then we got stuck on {otis redding}. i could easily picture "these arms of mine" as the first song we dance to, although it doesn't have much sentimental value to us as a couple, we like the idea of a classic, old school option that isn't just the catchy song of 2011. the song is sweet, sexy and paul likes it a lot. maybe more then "like a star", but not as much as the last song that has my panties in a knot.

my new FAVOURITE artist is a good ol' canadian girl from BC named {hannah georgas}. she is amazing on every level. i love her style, her look, her music and her voice. she's unique and super talented, and her music is fun and girlie, but still honest and real. she just released her first cd and i love EVERY track on it. my favourite however, is called "shine", and it is truly the perfect song for our first dance. i made the boy practice with me in our living room, and had to cut it short cause i started crying and needed to pull myself together. i guess this means this could be the one?

as for the rest of the music being played at the wedding, we have our fabulous band for the reception, and have chosen the rest of the music to be played during the ceremony.

I will be walking down the aisle with my daddy to "lullaby" by the {dixie chicks}. i don't think i have ever listened to this song without crying, so what else will be new the day of the wedding. while signing the marriage licence we will play "i want to hold your hand" sung by {t.v. carpio} on the {across the universe} soundtrack. and once the officiant pronounces us husband and old lady, we will walk down the aisle to "strawberry swing" by {coldplay}. because my dad and i have serious crushes on stevie nicks, we will dance our father daughter dance to "landslide" by {fleetwood mac}...but the live version, not the recorded.
i couldn't be more stoked about our choices, and can't wait to dance my lil' heart out.
