Ask a Question
I want to become an event planner. Help!

I have been told for years that I'm great at planning/organizing, but I never really thought about it as a career...until I saw how much fun it was to plan my own wedding. Nearly everything we did was DIY & we've had so many compliments on the day. It's really helped encourage me to look into my options for some type of work as a planner.

BUT I have no clue where to start!! I know some of you ladies have gotten certified & started your own side businesses...Would you share how you got started? Any advice on the best places to go for online training/certifications? Any help would be awesome.

Thanks, ladies. Hope all the planning is going well :)

Start off with family, friends, personal parties....You might have to even eat the costs on ust geting it out there with photos and experience. I don't know any person sites to suggest into getting certified, but they are out there. I know Retrobride did a course, she's up in Canada, but I can't help you with a direct contact.  If you have the talent and the dream, go for it. I've seen many, many of our WBC go out there and test the waters. You never know until you float!  Go for it! Yayyy, I'm routing for ya!

I got started with a business.  I did an internship that was 6 months (just the weekends) unpaid and that sucked, but when I was done I was guaranteed a job.  I found this the best way to go because then I instantly had the connection to their name, which was already established with vendors.  There was no start up cost just time.  Now I don't have to get my name out there I just instantly get the brides from their already established reputation.  A lot of wedding planning can be reputation and relationship with vendors so it is great when you instantly get into that.  Good luck!

I took a course at home from ICS collage here in Canada, they get alot of material from Pen- Fosters a study at home collage in the states..... Then I got my name out to family and friends and LOTS of volunteer work, The internship Idea is a good one, I may look into that myself in the new year....Good luck

Thanks so much for all of the advice & encouragement, ladies! I'm sure it won't be an easy start (especially because I have a full time job that I will have to keep in the mean time)...but I'm really excited to try it out & see if it's for me :)
