Ask a Question
When did you start DIYing?

A quick question... how far out from your wedding did you start all of your DIY projects? We still have more than a year (15 months exactly) and I want to start projects but Im afraid it may be too soon!

What do you think?

My wedding is in just under 13 months.. I honestly dont plan to start any DIY until next spring/summer... I just dont have the space in my house and I will be busy in school haha. I might do the invites ahead of time so they are ready to go..that be about all. Im actually dreading the DIY... i dont do crafts lol

Depends on how many you have.  I would start at least 90 days ahead and if you have alot to do.  I would do one a month.  Anything perishable, I would do as close as possiable to the wedding date

I have 14 months to go but I have done a few projects but I plan on starting most of them by spring 2010, but if you are not a crafty person you can use this time for trial & error, that is what I am doing and you will have alot of time to change or make adjustments without stressing yourself to death....... good luck

Oh yeah, I started within 2 weeks of getting engaged which was over a year and a half from our projected wedding date. We're folding 1000 cranes, and that takes a while. I also started making my and my BM's bouquets about 16 months before the date. But it all depends what you're doing. I would hold off on delicate things.

i would take a look at the things you want to DIY---and allow for plenty of time.  You don't want to wait (like me) to the end and push to get them all done.  i fyou take your time it will give you time to get them right and not rush.

My wedding date is in 30 days and I started my DIY projects around the 1st of the year so when its all said and done I started 10 months befor the wedding..  Most of my projects take up alot of space so just try to keep that in mind.. You dont want to do something and have it take over the whole house or garage for the next year and a half.. Also a word for the wise, you can never tell if you are going to have some change like colors and or date something like that.. So if you did have a changed and you have already dont tons of DIY stuff you wont be able to take it back and so on....  Happy Planning!!!

It really depends on how many you have to work on.
If there's a lot, you might want to start early just so that you're not freaking out towards the end. With me, they tend to take longer (sometimes by an hour, sometimes by days) than originally expected and I tend to keep adding things. Right now I am working on adding crystals to a chandelier. I am adding more than I thought I would, but I want it to be gorgeous!
Anyway, it really just depends on how many you have.
If you really want to go ahead and start, go for it! I think the only thing I'm making myself wait on except for the flowers is the crystal tree simply because I don't want it to get messed up.

Mine is in 14 months and come November I am starting (thats when the money hits for it) With my colors I know that come X mas time I can get candles in silver from Hobby Lobby so I will be buying them out since I know after x mas is over it will be harder and more costly to purchase these items. I plan on buying when there is a sale period. I have my idea for centerpieces so if I see the vases I want on sale I will get them all even if it is 12 months away still and just store it.

I agree you will need time for trial and error . making mock ups takes time so the DIY bride I dont think can start too soon , in my eyes anyways..have sale will travel (then store it!)

I started right away.  Obviously there are things that will need to wait but you can do lots of other projects.  We will have been engaged 16 months before we're married.  There's really no time line, it's all up to you!

Our wedding is in October, and we started our DIY projects in about March.  There is nothing wrong with starting early, and it may save you some stress at the end. It also tends to spread out the expenses over a longer period. The only issue is whether you are absolutely sure that each DIY project is going to be something you are satisfied with.  I've seen people suddenly decide they want to change their colors, and then feel like they had to start all over again.

Thank you for all of your answers! Im soo eager to go ahead and get started and I THINK these are the colors I will stick with. Maybe if I go ahead and start planning, I will have to go through with it! Space is an issue so I may just start doing little things that dont take up too much room. Aside from that, I think it will help with the budget to spread things out and purchase little by little.

I started within a week or two of getting engaged which was about a year and a half before the wedding.. i figured the more i got done early the less stressed i would be when it got down to the last minute( and i could stretch the budget some and wouldnt have to come up with alot of money at once)
