Ask a Question
Titanium Ring?

Hey Ladies,

Question!

FH and I went into a jewelry store just to look around and since he isn't much of a jewelery guy we thought that a titanium ring would be more his style. Its plain, and masculine and not to mention cheaper lol!

When we asked to see one the lady helping us wouldn't let us!!! She said, you don't want that, if he ever gets in an accident and his hand swells up, he will loose his finger (apparently these cannot be cut off, they have to be lasered off)

He has asked a few guys at his work that have them and they all say they love them... I don't know what to do.

Do you guys know anything about this? Is your FH getting one? Is this lady just being rude? HELP!

I think thats what she was doing too. It really pissed me off too because thats where my engagement ring comes from and I really wanted the matching band, but I don't want to give them my business anymore lol

Actually the little lady is correct. If something does happen they wouldn't be able to cut the ring off his finger and they are some other ones rings style of rings if something happen that person would lose there finger. Look it up

My FH will probably be getting one too. He actually already has plain one. When we got engaged the thought it wasn't fair that the girl got something to prove that she was getting married and the guy didn't so we got him one too lol. Some people think its weird but I find it kinda cute :)

I agree with Jenny. My FH is in consturction and is constantly using his hands. We need a ring that will hold up. Plus he loves the basic style and idea of these rings. We're getting one!

My dh has one and LOVES it! I tried to get him gold and he actually said no he wanted that one.  We went in to i to knowing if he gains weight or finger swells it will be hell getting off , but he still wanted it.  He works out daily so he takes it off then.  This serves a daily checker to make sure it still fits.

@nicolie1613 - my friend did this to, and on the wedding day he moved his engagement ring to his right hand.  His engagement ring was his birth stone.

When we went to pick my FH's out he really liked the Titanium one but they told us the same thing. They also told us that it can't be re-sized so if he gains or loses a lot of weight he won't be able to wear it. We went with white gold so we have the option to get it re-sized later...and just incase anything ever happened and it had to be cut off.

My FH  was originally looking at titanium as well, but in his line of work we were worried about not being able to cut it off if necessary. So we decided to go with the white gold. More money but nice to know he won't loose his finger and can get it resized later if need be.

FROM JEWELRY WEBSITE:

Emergency Medical Technicians, Fire Departments, and Hospital Emergency Rooms can quickly remove titanium rings in case of an injured finger.

We hear false claims from jewelry stores that titanium can't be cut. Many jewelers spread this rumor when titanium started to weaken their sales of more expensive bands. If titanium could not be cut, we wouldn't be able to make our rings in the first place using ordinary high-speed steel tools!

Several non-destructive methods for ring removal are available before resorting to cutting a ring. For example: soak the hand in ice water for a couple of minutes to reduce the size of the finger. Apply lotion, liquid soap or lubricant, then pull the ring with a rocking motion.

I actually did not think about the fact that emergency crews are becoming more prepared for these situations.  Also, on google I was only able to find a photo of 1 injured finger.  If this was as big as a problem as the jewlers say there would be more complants.

My husband has one.  He got it for the same reasons laurie88 FH got his (construction).
Thank you rmmharrison for the post.  I printed it out to show him.

I had ever thought about the rings in case of emergency but I think with the technology there is now it wouldn't be a problem and I have never known about a person that had had a finger cut because of this, actually most of the men get titanium rings, and I really like #2 and 4.

My FH ended up with a white gold band over titanium. We want to be able to get the ring resized if we needed it because he does plan on losing quite a bit of weight.

Just a heads up to you ladies there is a difference between titanium and tungsten carbide. Titanium DOES scratch and it looks terrible after awhile if you don't get it polished. It is a fairly lightweight metal and sometimes it feels a little cheap. My FH has a promise ring that is titanium and it looks really bad if he doesn't get it polished. Tungsten carbide on the other hand does not scratch. It is a fairly heavy metal and my FH really liked the weight of it but again it can't be resized.

OK....wait!
I don't know if my husband has titanium or tungsten carbide.  He just told me it's scratched.  So I wonder if it's titanium.  It's also really heavy.  Could that be the size (a 13)?

Mine guy is in construction too and wants a titantium band. He says he won't wear it to work anyways and doesn't seem to concerned about it so I'll let him go for it.... and if that one comment from rmmharrison is true then I'm not going to worry about it.

I shope only at Kay Jewelers, because they have always seemed the most experienced and customer friendly.  I am the type of person who does thorough research before I ask a question to ensure I'm not just being "sold".  Plus, diamonds and jewelry are TOTALLY my thing!!!

Titanium is lightweight like aluminum.  It cannot be resized later on, so you would need to buy another if his hand grew.  It can be engraved.  It is true that they cannot cut off the ring in an emergency situation... he would lose his finger instead.  Titanium can crack or scratch under enough pressure or weight, but do you want to risk the love of your life's handsome hands to save money? I didn't.  If you FH works with his hands I would not suggest titanium, or would suggest he not wear it at work.

Tungsten is similar to Titanium, but should include carbide in the make-up, and is a much heaver metal.  Like titanium, it cannot be resized.  Tungsten, however, cannot be engraved.  It will not crack or scratch.  How you recieve it in the store is how it will most likely look in 50 years.  But, again, I would not suggest this ring if your FH works with his hands.

Gold is more expensive, but (in my opinion) well worth every penny!  It can be resized, engraved, rebuffed, shined, etc.  If your FH hand is smashed, the ring can be easily cut off, sent to the jeweler, and come back good as new... and always the original ring you gave to him the day you said "I Do"!

My FH insisted I buy him a titanium band (actually it was almost exactly like your 3rd pick!) after telling me he got me what I wanted, why wouldn't I let him get what he wanted.  How could I argue with that?!  Luckily, he was sized on a hot, humid day (which makes your hands swell... so make sure you are sized on a cool, dry day for the best fit!) so we had to return the titanium band and send off for a new one after we resized him.  I finally convinced him white gold was the way to go.  He never thought about his hand needing to be resized later on, and Kay's offers a Lifetime package for a percentage of the total cost, which covers everything on the ring except for losing the ring.  My fiance works in a factory on the machines where they make plastic bottles and is always tinkering with trucks and building things at home, so it made sense to get gold.  Plus, with the lifetime warranty, ANYTIME it needs buffing or resizing (even if its every month) I can just drop it off and it costs me nothing!  It was well worth it for us.

Whatever you choose to do, make sure you really look into it.  Buying jewelry is a huge investment, and you can pass your wedding jewelry down for generations.  If your FH is rough on jewelry I would suggest 10 carat gold, if you choose gold.  The lower the carat, the less gold it has in it, and the stronger the metal, because gold is a SOFT metal.  Also, see if you apply for the jewelry store credit card.  It's a great way to build credit, because jewelry stores are considered "luxury credit" and earns you better credit more quickly.  Keep an eye out for sales around Holidays, also.  I work at a state funded program, so I have to be super frugal! haha!

Hope this helped!  Best of luck to you and your fiance!

My hubby was thinking the same thing. But my best friends husband was told to get a titantium one since he's in the military.

i like how they look alot, and if they were dangerous, they'd be outlawed to sell.

It's true, its difficult to break but in the long run it works out. My hubbys planning on wearing it on a string while he's at work and than putting it back on, because he works constantly with his hands and they could get caught in the machines he works with.

Goodluck though.

Many firemen and cops in my family and emergency crews and hospitals can get it off without a problem, but they can shatter and if they get scratched there is really nothing you can do, but they are pretty strong.
We just bought a colbalt ring. It a newer material. Naturally white (so it won't go back to yellow, like gold) and with the FH being a geologist, he needed something that would hold up to field work (so platinum was out). We liked the titanium too but he is pretty fair skinned and the colbalt being a little lighter color just looked a little better on him.
