Wedding Cake
Our wedding cake
I ended up having the cake done by an enthusiast who's number I got from my new MIL. She did a fabulous job and I was really glad in the end not to have to worry about getting it done myself.
The bottom layer was vanilla, the middle was chocolate and the top was lemon. It was covered in buttercream with a cornelli lace finish. I added the florals at the last possible second before our guests started to arrive. Whew! |

My DIYs
for other people!
I used my friend's bridal shower as a dry run at the cup cake tower I want for my own party. Didn't do too badly, won't be as time consuming the next time now that I have it all figured out. They have a black, white and silver theme for the wedding so I used it for the shower as well.
What do you think? I used foil cake bases to make the tiers and styrofoam cake dummies that I wrapped in ribbon to separate them. It was a very inexpensive thing to produce. I've also seen it done with glass or silver charger plates, and wine glasses - also very cute. Thanks ladies! Here are some wedding flowers I put together for someone else. VERY SMALL BUDGET!!! Not MY cup of tea, but I think it turned out cute and will fit in to the surroundings. (destination event!) Also, flowers I did for friends last year and year before! |

It's Official!
August 15th!
As of Friday, I have an official date and ceremony time of 3:00 pm!
I had to go to the city hall in person in order to book an officiant and you can't book anything without a marriage license, (which is only good for 3 mos.) and two pieces of ID, and any other "supporting documents" you may need, and... Anyway, I GOT IT! I'm so glad we're doing it this way. I was afraid I'd regret not having an actual wedding in the traditional sense, but I'm really having fun planning and making this a special day/night JUST FOR US. When you have two kids, alone time is a hot commodity! |

Ask a Question
What's on your photographic "must have" list?
Does anyone have a line up of gotta-get-it shots for the photographer on the day of? I'm starting to think about what I may want pictures of and I know if I don't make my list ahead of time, I'll forget about it and I won't have pics of anything I want. I have a unique problem since I won't even actually have a photographer. The only people taking pictures will be myself, my fiance, our two witnesses and any random strangers we can harass into taking our picture. I guess I'll have to get creative!

Wedding Hair Style
update:
I just cut and colored my hair this week and I'm going to maintain this look at least until after the wedding. I haven't had bangs since I was 12. Wow! Is my forehead ever hot! Oh well. Thank god for my Flat iron! |

Makeup
Smashbox
Makeup I have no real idea about. I think I'll do that myself but I need to spend some serious $$$ and get some really nice product. I'm thinking M.A.C. because I always find they have trendy, well informed and talented staff to help make good choices. I'm not good at deciding which shadow goes where unless it comes in a quad, so I need all the help I can get.
Any other suggestions? |

The Party
Our Lakeside BBQ
I'm super excited about our Party! I call it our party because it really doesn't qualify as a reception. "Reception" invokes images of champagne and hors d'oeuvres. We going more in the direction of Kegs and nachos. Also, we're not telling anyone that we're getting married until it's already done. That way, guests won't feel pressured to bring us gifts we really don't want anyway.
That said, this is the only "wedding" we're going to have so outside BBQ or not it has to be the best, most elegant, ambient, and enjoyable BBQ anyone has ever been to. There aren't too many resources or ideas out there for this type of event, so I basically have to wing it. What do the antibride & groom wear to their own I-just-got-married-last-night-and-didn't tell-anyone-party? UPDATE: I've hired a new florist to do some flowers for us. I feel strange not doing it myself but I won't have time and I'm sure she'll do a far greater job than I could so I'M EXCITED!!! I want to keep the cost under $500, so I've ordered two large arrangements for the buffet and bar. One in a large rectangular basket and one in a tall galvanized bucket. I want all the flowers to look at home by the lake so I've asked for Sunflowers, Queen Anne's Lace, blue Delphinium, orange and red Cabbage Roses and various greens and grasses. For the tables and other vignettes, I bought little square metal containers at the $ store. The florist is transplanting 5" white daisy mums into each with a green ribbon or raffia bow UPDATE: Our post-wed BBQ was an absolute blast! I'm really glad we did everything the way we did. It was so relaxed and laid back that it made it easy for everyone to have a good time, make new friends and help us celebrate our new life together. |

Wedding Rings And Jewelry
Can't wait to get it!
I don't have an engagement ring. My intended and I have been together for three years, living together for two. We have two kids, a mortgage, a car payment, and we're both in career "transition". In short, the e-ring just seemed an unimportant extravagance so we're just going to skip to the wedding rings.
Mike is set on a wide, simple, platinum band for himself. Done. Easy. I on the other hand... I have some ideas. I know I need my ring to be on the big side, (even chunky) white gold, (no platinum! Too $$$. I want all the bling I can afford!) and unusual. I'm entertaining the ideas of: A. a large colored stone in a pave setting (one of our two birthstones - citrine or aquamarine) B. a wide band w/ an offset channel C. an unknown antique "find" We're going ring shopping this weekend. My Mike knows "a guy" ( he has "a guy" for everything!) who's family owns a jewelery store so hopefully we'll get some good advice. We're also going to check out the antique market. Very exciting! Any opinions? UPDATE: This is definitely the one!!! We went ring shopping this weekend, and my first instinct was the correct one. I tried this ring on and it's exactly what I want. I didn't even try any others on I liked it so much. What a relief to have that done and not have to worry (obsess!) about it! Both my ring and Mike's ring are 7mm wide and about 2 mm thick, 14k white gold w/ a brushed finish. My band has a TDW of 1.0 carat in diamonds. (More bling than I thought I was in for) Got a super deal too!!! UPDATE: We have our rings! I love it and can totally see wearing it everyday forever! Pics to come! |

Hotel & Suite
Fairmont Chateau Laurier
After checking it out this past weekend, we've decided to cancel our original reservation at the Perth Manor in favor of the Chateau Laurier in downtown Ottawa. We'll be staying in a suite on the Gold Floor which is something of a major upgrade, but what the hell right?
Go big or go home. I can't wait. Incidentally, within the Chateau is my favorite restaurant "Wilfrid's" so we'll definitely have our post-wedding dinner and celebration there. |

Wedding Flowers
My DIY dilemma!
I change my mind almost daily when it comes to my flowers. It seems a minor detail as I will only carry a small bouquet as not to overwhelm the dress or venue, but to me it's the most crucial element. I've done the complete wedding floral package for five of my friends now, so if I don't produce for myself the perfect floral accompaniment to our evening, I'll kick myself forever.
Which do you think? No pressure. #6 is my current favorite. I'm really liking the Victorian feel of the silver tussy mussy and I think it would look great with my more contemporary accessories. I think I would do it without the greens though. Just white roses and dendrobium orchids. |
