Despite growing fertility problems in the capital, the city’s only center offering egg freezing said it has not made any money since its opening in July.
However Qiao Jie, director of the center of reproductive medicine at Peking University Third Hospital, said the experience doctors gained with the technology outweighed any financial concerns.
Qiao said the center would eventually make money because more women were waiting to have children and there were a growing number of rich couples in the city.
“We receive about 1,000 patients per day on average and the number 10 years ago was about 100,” Qiao told METRO.
“Many women postpone pregnancy because of work pressure nowadays, but their eggs lack vigor after the age of 30 and often cause infertility problems.
“Women do not feel fertility is a problem when they are young and problems may arise as their age increases.”
Peking University Third Hospital invested more than 1 million yuan in freezing egg technology, and it is the only hospital offering this type of fertility service in Beijing.
Egg freezing gives women the chance to store their eggs during their reproductive prime for use later in life.
