Ask a Question
Fondont or buttercream?
I thought I wanted fondont until I was talking with my FSIL. She's having a super nice, formal wedding at a hotel on the beach in South Beach. She still wants buttercream. She says the fondont doesn't taste half as good and why have a cake that doesn't tast as good as it looks. I'm undecided still. I'll probably wait to see how hers does. What are ya'll doing?

I don't remember which of my favorite brides I stole the first pic from but I know I've seen it posted about a thousand times since! I like the diagonal squares but I think I just want a black ribbon on the bottum of each tier and then flesh fowers added to the tiers, not sure what kind yet. Maybe callas like in the 3rd pic.

I like the next to last cake best for the grooms cake but the last is more realistic. He likes poker so I'm sure it will be something along those lines

Although buttercream is delicious, you also have to think about how long it will be sitting out.  A buttercream frosted cake can sit out on a table for about 4 hours in a cool room, in a warm room or outdoors, even less.  A fondant frosted cake can sit out for 8-10 hours.  So a buttercream cake cannot stay out as decoration for your entire reception, that means you require refrigerator space for you cake, many venues just don't have that much space available.  Something to think about.
Additionally, all of the cakes that you have chosen in your photos are fondant covered cakes, you can't get those looks/effects from buttercream icing.

Mmmm thats tough question, I dont think I ever ate a fondont cake before, I am use to buttercream. My friend's sister is doing my cake and she does butter cream and everyone loves her cake. She did my graduation cake (1995) and EVERYONE loved it. I think it will be better tasting. I think fondont looks cool, but you can put some bling on yours too, I really havent decided too much about a cake topper and all that. Its pretty much up in the air.

BUTTERCREAM!! i dont know about how long you can leave it out for, but i know you can get the same style you would get from fondant. the cake i have posted on my page is a fondant and my baker said that she can recreate it in a buttercream no problem. fondant is VERY sweet! TOO sweet. the cake beneath it is dry. i dont like it at all. buttercream is yummy and the cake stays nice an moist. ...but thats just my opinion. lol..good luck!

A couple other things to consider would be that butter cream is a lot cheaper as well as easier to cut. Most of it would depend on whether your wedding is going to be outdoors or not. If it's inside I would definitely go butter cream, and if it's outside....... I would still say butter cream as long as it's not going to be sitting out too long. :-)

I'm doing buttercream.  Fondant is very smooth & you get a more flawless look, but I've met very few people who enjoy the taste of it.  I'd rather my guests rave about the taste of my cake than how pretty it was.  Nonetheless, you can still get a beautiful cake with buttercream frosting, just depends on which baker you go with.   My baker isnt far from our reception site, so fortunately we wont have to worry about the cake being out too long.

fondant tastes not-so-good to me but it has benefits! I am going for buttercream b/c I have to (sort of) lol but I would go for fondant if I wanted a very different and ornate cake!

I am doing butter cream too! I am picky about cake and if it didn't have butter cream frosting I probably wouldn't like it, unless it was german chocolate cake - i luv that frosting. ANyways I know that some brides choose to have butter cream underneath the fondant of their cake to get the look they want, but still get the taste.

Thanks everyone! I think I will probably go with butter cream too. The wedding's indoors and I'm keeping the cake pretty simple so there's no need to sacrifice taste

Buttercream! definitely buttercream.  Fondant is just too much, in my opinion. Our cake artist gave us just a small taste when we went for our initial consultation and I could never imagine eating a whole piece of cake with that on it. Buttercream is much lighter and your guests will thank you for it ... all of the people that I've talked to that have gone to weddings with fondant on the cakes were grossed out.  LOVE the black and white cake - by the way!

fondont makes a cake look extremely clean and smooth, yet fondont tastes like poop!!! So use buttercream if they are a good cake designer they can still make it look clean and smooth. The lady that is doing make cake refuses to use fondont because of the taste she is making the polka dots on my cake out of sugar!!!
