Wedding Cake
Real or fake?

Hello, ladies!

I'm back after about a two month break from WBC postings. I wasn't in the planning mood much due to some family issues, but my planning has resumed. YEAH!

I wasted no time scheduling our tastings and consultations. Michael and I go tomorrow to our baker so that he can taste the champagne cake with strawberry filling that I fell in love with at a bridal expo! I have the flavor, but I'm undecided on design. I want high impact for not a lot of money. That being said, I've thought about renting a fake cake for the cutting pictures and having sheet cakes. Any thoughts?

Pictures are of cakes I like that we may get if we go "real." :)

I own a cake decorating business and fake cakes are really popular!  For my wedding I couldn't image someone else making my cake, or having to pay for one, so I will be doing a fake cake! I will then be serving slabs, or cupcakes to the guests.  It doesn't matter if people know that the cake isn't real, they just want to see how beautiful it is than eat it! :)

I have read about saving money in so many "budget bride" articles about faux cakes to save money, high on desgin, low on budget, serve a slab cake in the back type plans... but I've asked a number of cake shops where I live (Toronto) and all said there is almost no savings to be had - cake is cheap. It's the design that is expensive. I'm told you're paying for the design and the labour, more than the cake itself, and it doesn't matter if they're decorating styrofoam or actual cake, you pay one way or the other. That said if you CAN find a cake shop that will save you cash on doing this, GO FOR IT and please post the reason it saves money according to your cake shop so I can take taht back to cake shops where I am and try to save money with my argument. Right now i have none when they say it costs just as much time, effort and icing on styrofoam as it does on real cake. LOL

I love ethe cakes you have chosen, - the pearl style is one I love as well. :) Good luck and keep us posted!

My MOH had her mom bake her cake, then after the cake cutting, the venue rolled it away and brought out the cut sheet cake!  no one knew!  I say if it saves a butt load of money go fake and then have sheet cake--I love Costco (a wholesaler) cake and I wouldn't mind having it at my wedding!

You can do a combination of both.  Have a real bottom layer with the other tiers being styrofoam.  The baker can decorate all the tiers.

You then cut the bottom layer ......

Then you order your sheet cake for serving the guests.

I am doing a fake cake for my wedding.  I found this website where you can order cake dummie sets which is below.  I also found another website for a store that specialize in fake cakes and they had some pretty good points and priceing.  I know different shops have different prices but its a start..  Hopes this helps.
