The Proposal
John and I had been dating for a little over a year to a year and a half at this point and on this day, we were both sitting around in the computer room together looking up on something together on the Internet when he mentioned something related to weddings and I just started saying my would-be name if we got married "Jessica S_______" and he was shocked at first and then started blushing a really deep red. I remember asking him how nice my future name sounds and he agreed and admitted that he had been thinking about us getting married for a long time now. I was so happy that I wasn't the only one feeling this way and I secretly hoped that he would get down on his knees right then and there and ask for my hand in marriage.
We had talked about marriage a few times after we had started dating for a while but it was never as serious as this. We hadn't talked about getting married for quite a long time til this point and I knew that he felt the same as I did about getting married but I just wanted him to come out and say it first. He had hinted at it here and there on certain days when we have long, deep, meaningful conversations but we would switch into a different topic after saying a few things about it because I didn't want to force him into talking about it if he wasn't the one to bring it up first. When I first met John four years ago, he was so shy but after we started dating, he became more extroverted. I remember him telling after we first started dating that if we were ever to get married that he would ask for my hand first from my father before asking me because we both come from a Catholic background and he has a lot of respect for my parents as well as his, it's just the way he was raised. Well a few months went by and along came the summer, John had told me that he recently entered this draw to win a trip for 8 to Hawaii for 3 days and four nights, but I never thought that we would actually win but we did!! John, myself, my mom, my dad and my older brother along with his younger sister, mother and father were off to Hawaii before you could say, "Holiday in the sun". A few days before we left, he was telling me what he had planned for all of us to do during our time there, such as see tourist attractions, go to the beach, go hiking and etc. We arrived in Hawaii during the wee hours of the day so we spent the first day just getting used to our new environment. However, on the second day, John and I were walking on the beach barefeet with the sunset surrounding us and our families walking behind us and he began talking about how Hawaii is the place to come to share with your loved ones and how he likes seeing all the couples here soaking up the sun while being so in love and right then and there, he got down on one knee, took my hand and asked me to marry him! I was so shocked!!! I thought it would take him another year or so to ask me this question but nope, he had done it. His parents were pretty shocked but mine definitely weren't (he had already asked my dad for my hand in marriage a few months ago). I started to cry and my hands were shaking and he had tears in his eyes too, he tried so hard not to let them loose and he put the ring on my hand and then he got up and twirled me around and kissed me like he'd never see me again. |
