i dont really know what "proper" wedding protocal is with this, but i have always been one to send thank you cards anywhere from 1-8 days after the event or gift receival.  i think it is courteous to send the note as quickly as possible, plus it's easier to check off of your to do list, rather than going back to what people did or contributed all together between showers & the wedding.

we will be sending our actual wedding thank you cards the week that we return from the honeymoon, because we want to use a honeymoon photo as a thank you postcard.  plus, by then, we'll have a listing of what each person gave at our wedding.

I sent my thank you cards out within 2 weeks from each of my showers.  I did it quickly so that I could get it out of the way and move on to other things - but people appreciate quick thank you cards so that they don't feel that their generosity was overlooked.

Wedding thank you cards are a bit of a different story - I think people expect them to come a little later down the road. (after the honeymoon and you are settled into your home)  I've heard that brides have as long as a year after the wedding to send them (which I think is ludicrous! a few months at the MOST@!)

Take a look at my website - we did a picture thank you card and I think it turned out really cute - in fact, I got thank you cards for my thank you cards :)  Maybe it will give you an idea?

Keep in mind that someone who went to your shower and didn't get a thank you card might think that you didn't appreciate their shower gift if you wait until after the wedding to send it - They might be hurt and their wedding gift might not be so generous.

I addressed and did my thank you cards for my shower the evening after my shower.  I got so many calls and comments from women blown away that they got that quickly and they really appreciated it.
