Fish in centerpieces...
so, i was thinking of putting a pink fish in each of the centerpieces. what do you ladies think of that?? personally i dont see an issue with it, but i have been off the mark before so im asking for advice! lol.

**ok, so if i went with beta fish, and they only come in blue and red, then do you think the blue would be ok with my PINK wedding??**

i think it is a great idea!! especially if you put some kind of vase light under the bowl so that it illuminates the centerpeices!! it would be original and beautiful

I would be horrified if one of the fish died and the guests had to stare at a dead fish at the reception. I do believe if done right would be AWESOMENESS!!!!

I think its a good idea..... just be careful that the fish dont die... my MOH went to a wedding and they had this as the centerpeice and when they arrived some of the fish were floating dead.....

One problem would be what to do with them afterwards. Most people probably wouldn't want to adopt them as a pet...not sure if guests would be cruel and flush them when they got home?? I'd be concerned about it...not very humane : (

well, i was thinking that i could just let anyone take them home with them afterward. and if no one does, ill give them to my brothers girlfriend or something. i wouldnt want anyone to flush them either. its def some i have already thought about tho.

I went to a wedding where the bride and groom's venue didn't allow flowers (it was at a museum and apparently the pollen wasn't good for some of the artifacts) and they used fish as centerpieces. I thought that was really clever of them! At the end of the night, they had a draw for each table to see who would be able to take the fishies home - even gave us (I got one) food and some bowl cleaner as well. My fishie lived for another 2 years until he went to fish heaven and down my toilet. :(

But as long as you're careful, fishes are a great idea!

I think it is a neat idea, just be careful of what kind of fish you use - some are better bowl fish than others.
Beta's would be perfect for this idea. They are the fish you see in the plastic cups at pet stores (aka Chinese Fighting Fish). They don't need much room to swim, so are perfectly content living in a bowl. Not to mention, they are beautiful fish (come in shades of red and blue, long flowing tails!). But - hence the name, they are fighters. Only one fish per bowl, and no mirrors (they will attack at their reflection, and it can turn them an ugly shade of grey, a stress response). And, since they can live in a bowl their whole life, if you gave each one away, that person can just take the whole centerpiece home without having to worry about needing to buy anything to keep the fish.
I think it is a great idea! Very unique!

I was going to do this, it's one of my first posts but we will have a lot of kids so I think I'm only going to do a few on the tall cocktail tables. I made a trial at home and the problem is there are a limited  numer of fish that can survive without bubbles. hHey're called labrynth fish. Shame on me, I tested with some non labrynth fish, vowing to watch and pulled them out if they looked bad but I forgot and had a dead fish :(  You have to be sure they can live at least 6 hours without aeration. Beta's work best and I think would be the most likely ones to find in pink but the other labrynth fish are goldfish and gouramis- which come in a lot of colors but I'm not sure about pink. Good Luck!

oh wow! i didnt realize it was such a big deal!! holy cow! good thing i asked. ok so betas are best , but no mirror! good thing soontobeamrs said so, i was planning to have the vase sitting on a mirror... the fish i have in the pictures are tropical salt water....haha...maybe dumb question, but would you just add salt to some warmer water?? lol...i should go and talk to a pet store!! aha! good idea!

thanks girls!

I didn't read everyone's posts to see if they mentioned this but be sure you DO NOT put the beta's in the same tank, bag, centerpiece at any time... they literally kill each other.

Not meaning to be pessimistic... I really love your idea! Just letting you know the nature of the beta. ;-)

I would not dare use saltwater fish in my centerpieces as it is way too hard to maintain.  I am a aquatic life guru and believe me you don't want saltwater fish.  I know they are the most colorful species but there is so much to maintain with the water levels (pH, ammonia).  These fluctuate quickly in small amounts of water (your centerpiece) and the fish will die.  I'm not saying it can't be done but it will be hard.  Most of the fish won't make it out of the reception.  The salt that is used is not regular salt, you have to buy the correct salt from pet stores and it has to be mixed with distilled water.  With this in mind, putting new fish in new water is very stressful to them, this is why they tell you at the pet stores to leave them in the bag in the water so they can get used to the temperature of the water before intoducing them to their new homes.  I had a 2 gallon saltwater tank and it drove me crazy because I had to check the levels of the water everyday.  When I upgraded to a ten gallon I only had to check every 2 days.  The water evaporates but the salt does not, so when the water evaporates the salt level is to high so more water has to be added.  I am using fish as my centerpieces also, but I have not decided between goldfish or bettas.  Check out my blog under purple weddings you can see the idea that I have for the centerpieces.  There are pink bettas out there you just have to find them.

I love the idea of the fish! We were going to use betas but I am having an outdoor wedding in July and I'm afraid it would get so hot the fish would die. My Fiance says no they won't but he's been wrong before and I don't want dead fish at my wedding lol.
