We are having centercakes. We just could not find a centerpiece that we could agree on, and found that they are so expensive to do anyhow. My mom came up with the idea of a centercake, and we loved it. Our centercake will be the exact replica of our main cake, only that we are having numbers made out of steel and putting them on top of the cake as table numbers, and a green cymbidium orchid on top (our main cake is a monogram "V", also steel and a cymbidium orchid). We are going to home depot and having them cut us boards that are the dimension of the base of the cake, and then wrapping them in kind of a plastic coated Damask wallpaper...this will add height. Surrounding the cake is going to be 4 votives, with alternating black and white candles, and then diamond confetti loosely place in between it all. (see blog for pic of cakes)
Ok as for price breakdown, these puppies are no ways cheap, but they are most friendly than vases, and flowers are hard core.
2 tier centercake: 6" base 4" top, serves 8-10 guests, was $50 per cake. (we have 14 in total) The filling is a tuxedo cake (white chocolate/dark chocolate)
3 tier Main Cake: Serves 125 people was $610
Each tier being a different flavor (tiramisu, carrot, and chesecake)
The beauty of this is that we did not have to order any extra desserts, and took that savings and put it towards a chocolate buffet, and fruit.
Our baker is providing us with a lot of cake boxes so that guests can their slice home...and we can lug our leftover main cake to the gift opening at my mom's the next day!
And don't worry about people touching it so much...they won't make it all disgusting...afterall that is their cake to eat right?
Good luck with it all...hope this novel helped a bit! ;)
