Ask a Question
Having a bridal shower?

Are ya'll having a bridal shower? I don't even know what they are and why people have them! Never knew that people had them. So obviously I've never been to one.... What is the idea? Just like a baby shower? You get gifts from family/friends? Is that so they don't have to bring gifts to the wedding? Or do they do both?

A guest must bring a gift to bridal shower.  Even if they do not attend they should send a gift.

Wedding guests NO gift is required or to be expected.

Gotch ya...So what is a bridal shower then!? We don't expect gifts from anyone....Hence the reason we are not doing the gift registry thing.  We don't need anything! Hah.  That and people never buy off them anyway.

Just remember this and you'll be fine...

Open gift...
Look surprised (don't look more surprised from one gift to another)
Hold the gift up and tell everyone what it is...
Specify a use for the item..."oh I always wanted one of these frying pans" "oh look! a frying pan! now Fiance can cook me breakfast every morning" etc etc
Thank person who gave gift...and on to the next.

Don't forget to send thank you cards................................... Thats another story!

showers are such a blast! its a lot like a baby shower-except the theme is wedding! theres a ton of games you play that just make the ladies giggle and its a chance to personally thank the ladies in your life for being a part of it, and to spend time with them.  i appreciated this because i'm SO busy with work, school and wedding planning that I havent seen my family as much as i usually do, so it was nice to see everyone.  ladies bring gifts that will either help you with getting your home started, if you dont need that, then they will shower you with other gifts, picture frames, photoalbums, books, etc and somtime lingerie ;) we registered at target, thinking that people will use it for the wedding, but we got most of our gifts at the showers that were on the list! we had to go back and put more on there by popular demand.  people use them more then you think.  i know i always try to use it, even if the people are already living together, i always find them helpful, just because i dont always know what they need, and my gift wont be a waste if i know they want it :)  the most meaningful gift was from my fh's mom.  each time there is a special day- bday, father's day, graduation, etc,- the honored person uses a red plate for dinner.  she gave me a red plate so now that i'm starting my family, we can have the tradition as well.  she gave it to me at the shower, and everyone pretty much teared up, especially me! i didnt expect gifts, it meant more that they came to show their support. :)  collin was pretty jealous that guys dont get to have anything like that cuz all the gifts were basically for me lol

i found some origin stuff, thought this was interesting:
The origin of the bridal shower is quite interesting and can be traced back to Holland. It is an old story which states that a Dutch girl fell in love with a miller who was very poor. When she told her father, he forbade their marriage. So the young lady decided to marry the miller and stayed with him, despite his poverty.

As the neighbors heard about the news of them nearly starving, they came with help. They showered gifts and money on the newly married couple. From the money and gifts showered to the couple, they set up a good home and a good life for themselves. Since then, this tradition of bridal showers has been in practice. Though, today the celebrations of bridal shower are grand and all full of gaiety.

Bridal showers were meant to strengthen the ties between the bride and her friends, provide her moral support, and help her prepare for her marriage. Gift giving dates from the 1890's.
