DIY Project
Chocolate and Burnt Orange/Red Decor

Wow! I am luvin this chocolate card box….However, this item cost more than $100 dollars. I am trying to cut cost in all areas. So, i refuse to pay that amount for one simple yet cute item. Has anyone constructed a DIY card box? My fear is cutting a perfect slit in the box for the cards….Any suggestions?

www.hofcraft.com/papermache.htm  is a good place to get the boxes. Also micheals or hobby lobby should have them. So you can either spray paint the boxes, or cover them in a layer of fabric, or craft paper. www.papermojo.com is were I went. So your going to decided what layer is going to have the slit for the envelopes (top, middle, bottom) I seen some of them were the top has the slit and you just cut holes in the lids so the envelope can fall to the bottom. As for me. The middle layer will have a 1/8 to 1/4" slite in the middle, but I not making them fall to the bottom just stay in that middle box an allusion that they fall to the bottom. It's not that hard, can be time consuming (a few hours) but way worth it since your only spending a fraction of the cost. Mine is cost me $35 and anther plus it catered to what you want. Good luck and have fun!

I think it was pretty easy...at least that was for mine. I don't like the fabric look but paint or spray paint work ok...it depends on what you like. I think with fabric it just looks odd and could see too many creases on my friends that she had done. I got an exacto knife at michaels and used it to cut the slit....it was so easy using that ( i had tried a knife and scissors and that was a nightmare) I also bought my boxes at hobby lobby cuz i didn't like the selection my michaels had. My hobby lobby had a ton more. If you decide to use regular paint get a gloss spray that will help not only make it shiny but also act as a sealer. I cut my slit in the middle box and then put crystals around the opening. I cut the bottom out of the middle and the top out of the bottom box so they will fall through. I am using a pink led light affixed to the top of the middle lid so that while its set up at the reception, it will have the pink shining inside. Hope we help you some! It was fun for me!

The exacto knife makes it very easy to do your slot. VERY easy! that way you can do straight lines! I took a pen and flexible ruler to draw the lines. Then I used the exacto knife to cut on the lines. U just keep going over it and then it pops out. I even did my line after i had my box painted and it did perfect. It just popped out and didn't mess up any of my paint.  Also got my boxes 50% off at HL so they ended up being less than 10 bucks for all of them.

Like the girls before me said, an exacto knife will make things simpler for you!
Check my blog for some ideas if you like... I'm making them full time now!
$100 is a lot, especially with shipping on top of that.
(Mine are cheaper!)

Good luck, and just remember to take your time and not rush it... it will take a few hours for sure.

Also, spray paint is much easier to work with than fabric, just so you know.  The box in your photo is covered in a shantung silk, which is why it's so expensive.

I saw this box online too and loved it! however, with shipping to canada, and taxes and duty it would have cost me over $160, which there was absolutely no way I would pay that! i picked up my boxes for $11 from solutions (i think its only Canadian), but you could check Michaels. I bought satin to cover the boxes with for $5 from FabricLand, and the Ribbon for Michaels for $2. It took me about 3 1/2 hours to make it. To make the slit straight, I drew the line on the box with a ruler and then used an exacto knife to cut it. Check out my blog, i have pictures posted on there. Also, you can take a look at ilaloo's blog, she makes DIY boxes and has a bunch of photos posted.

No problem girl! Its really easy to do! Put up some pictures so we can see how it came out when you are through. Card boxes are so easy to make and why pay money when it doesn't really take that long and most of the supplies you can get at 20 to 50% off at craft stores? Plus you can add your own personalization to it which makes it that much better. Can't wait to see it! (Im under a new s/c in case you haven't noticed.)
