After cake appointment....
feeling a teeny bit disappointed

First let me tell you a little background.....our venue includes cakes and we can't use an outside baker. When we signed up last year they were using a bakery that was well known in our county. I actually went to a bridal show last year and they were there so I was sooo excited to try some cake! I did and it was AMAZINGGGGGGGGGGGGGG, the best cake I've ever had!! So of course I was excited......

Well....they have since switched bakers because apparently the first one was a little difficult to work with.....AND my FH went to a bridal shower with me and neither baker (new or old) was there but another one was so he tried a sample and loved it!!!! And he absolutely does not like cake! So he was actually excited about the cake now which was THRILLING to me because he does not like cake AT ALL!

So of course we were excited to go today to try some cake and all but we couldn't help but leave a little disappointed! First of all we waited there for almost 20 minutes and no one said anything to us...we had an appointment and there were people still from the morning (not sure if they walked in or had an appt) but it ran 20 minutes into ours!!! So we were already a little annoyed but oh well right? There's no choice, this is our baker whether we like it or not.

So we sit down and got to choose 4 different types of cake to try and while she made them we looked at designs. And we found out because we only have 75 people that if we got round or square shaped cake then that would mean we only get 2 tiers!! Ahhhhhh I kind of had a feeling that was going to happen....she said we could do a Styrofoam layer which would cost us $40 and yes we would have to pay for it....OR we could add another layer (20 pieces) for $80....So first of all we weren't supposed to pay anything for this cake so I don't really want to pay anything...and I don't feel like paying $40 for Styrofoam, and we don't need an extra 20 pieces and I didn't want to pay $80 for 20 extra pieces that we didn't need.

BUT if we did a hexagon cake then it would work and we could do 3 tiers....SO that's what we decided but it ends up with 8 extra pieces so we COULD have to pay for that, it's only $36 but I'm hoping my venue just foots the bill...cross fingers for one less thing to worry about! And I found a picture of white detailing that I just looooooove, it's not too much but just enough! I'm going to add that. It's going to be pretty much like the 1st picture in the post below except with the detail and the hexagon shape.

ANYWAY we finally got the cake and this is the worst part.....we did NOT like it!! Ahhhh....we tried raspberry, strawberry, cream cheese, and german chocolate (which is chocolate, coconut and pecan) fillings. The raspberry and strawberry were AWFUL! And the cream cheese was ok, just really plain. The german chocolate was very good and chance hates coconut and liked it. But that's what we picked...So it will be vanilla cake with buttercream icing and german chocolate filling...don't get me wrong, it was good!! But it just wasn't what I had in mind!

I feel bad because most people don't like coconut but nothing else was good. I thought about going out on a limb and just trying a regular chocolate filling but I dunno, not without trying it.

So that's where we left it, unhappy that we didn't find something we truly loved but VERY happy about how it will look!

What a shame you can't pick yours - we got a freebie cake from Publix for our "tasting" and it was awesome!  I would say do at least one layer with regular chocolate - I myself hate german chocolate and there may be some people who won't even try the cake if they know that's the filling.

I am in the middle of cake drama too!  Now we loved the taste of our cake but now, we are being told that the price of the cake is included in our wedding package but the labor cost is not! WTF!  I got an email from our venue and was informed that there is a $450 labor charge for our cake.  Now what do I do?  I sure hadn't budgeted for and extra $450 for a cake that was already supposed to be paid for...maybe I'll send my mom over to chew somebody out!

awww that stinks that you odn't have the option of your own baker---but I guess you have to work what you have.  I LOVE german chocolate cake.  We make it every year around Christmas.  I think your cake sounds very yummy!  I think that people will try it and if they don't like it, they can eat around it!  :-)  As long as you guys liked it, is all that matters.  Besides, its not something you see often so the little of difference will be great!

That's too bad that you're not 100% happy with your cake. Why can't you go back and ask them to try the chocolate with a different filling or something? But if not.. I don't know.. personally, I hate coconut. I think if I were a guest at your wedding I would take a piece and eat around the coconut i'm sure it would still be good chocolate is delicious!

Awww, so sorry for your cake nightmare! It's hard to really find a reasonable cake that even taste good at the same time. It is expensive! I had to even order my cake from my favorite bakery and they are 110 miles from me. Crazy huh? I don't care! I told them our location is about 40 miles from their location and I'm happy with that. I was not using anyone else, because I didn't want to be disappointed.
