Our Living Situation! What would you do?

Okay Ladies! I need some advice!! This is the deal. After me and my FH get married, we have 2 options on where we can live. We aren't saving up for a house right now, we are just saving up for the wedding. Of course the money we don't use for the wedding will go toward that, but i doubt it'll be a lot! =] We can either live by my parents (where i'm living now) or get an apartment.

Some people that i've talked to already think that we should get an apartment because we will be newlyweds and want our privacy. And some think that we should live by my parents.

The benefits living by my parents are: we won't have to pay rent. All we pay is the electric, and thats like 70$ a month. And of course we have my car note, gas, etc. But my point it that it'll take less time to save up for a house if we live by my parents than it would living in apartment.

My parents really don't bug us now when we are at my house. They knock, and they give us privacy. So i don't see that as a problem! BUT the house is very little. 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, and the kitchen and living room area are one big room. But it has everything you would need. I do see how that will be a down fall! Stuck in tight places together can start getting on peoples nerves!! So i'm stuck on what to do and whats best for us. What would you girls do??

Tough call!  I can see the pros & cons to both options.  For what it's worth, my FH is in the navy & gets a monthly housing allowance that covers all of the rent & utilities at our 2 bedroom townhouse.  When I moved to VA to be with him a few months ago, we had the option of him getting a smaller place & pocketing the leftover from his housing allowance to go towards the wedding, but that would have meant I would have had to have been a full-time live in with the family I nanny for.  Whereas now, I only live-in on the nights where they both have overnight shifts.  We don't regret the decision we made to have more space for us.  Good luck!  I'm sure you'll make the decision that is right for the two of you :)

I'd say get an apartment that cosy! Living with your inlaws is always awkward regardless of the size of the house.

Good luck!

I've rented since I was 18 and I kind of wish I would have lived with my parents longer so that I had the money for a downpayment on a house.  Luckily my fiance lived with his parents so he had a lot of it saved and we have the house :)

My advice would be to stick it out with your parents for a little bit.  Maybe give yourself a timeline...for eg. a year and come up with a budget of what you think you can save in a years time and in that year if you still don't have the right amount, decide to either buy a house or rent.  Then atleast you've had that time of paying no bills and can have the house that you want hopefully.

Good luck :)

we will be living with my parents until we "get on our feet"  they have a big house & don't mind. they have a rental house about 20 minutes from where we live now, and we will be renting it from them whenever we feel we are ready to move out.

Right now my FH and I are living with my parents trying to save up money to buy our first home. We have already rented for a year and came back here. (only because the landlord was selling the house) But its fun being back at home with the parents. My parents arnt like ALL parents. They are fun. We are all best friends. Its fun having all the spare money and not having to pay utilities and rent and stuff like that. But then it is fun to have your own place to decorate and just go about your business. I do that here but its just the thought of haveing your "OWN" place. If i was you i would try to stay at the parents house for as long as possible and save up as much as possible then try to find a place. I mean what much has changed when you get married? The fact that your married? You all will be doing the same stuff.

I would stay planted...at least until after the wedding. Save money or pay off any major debts you both have, that way you can go into the marriage with little or almost no debt at all.

I honestly think it's smart to live by your parents for at least a year, that way the money you would have spent on rent can be save for a down payment on a house or something. A year isn't that long if you think about it. And if 4 months down the road you realize it's not working, THEN get an apartment. Any opportunity to save money while you are first starting off your marriage is the best way to go! Good luck sweetie!
