So where do you live and whats something good about the place you live? What also stinks about your town!
Well I live in good ole Mobile Alabama...Right on the Gulf coast with some of the most beautiful white sand beaches that go on for miles and miles. We have a rd down town where the oak trees create a canopy over the rd and there are huge southern mansions on both sides of the rd....it brings you back in time. I absolutely love it!
The thing that stinks about my town....DUH HURRICANES! The pictures they show of Ivan and Katrina do no justice to what we actually had to live through down here. I still have nightmares from it.
The crappy? Well...the heat. But that's if you don't like heat. I LOVE it!! :D
What's crappy? The fires, how expenisve everything is, and although it is great to support the local community, to have a target, hobby lobby or some other chain stores would be nice, especially when it comes to wedding planning!
Ya'll dont have a target???? I agree it's great for the local merchants but man they have great stuff there!
The Good: There are some great beaches not far away (Long Point, Turkey Point...)
Great camping spots that are affordable
Great cottages within a two hour drive
Some great music venues:The Mod club, Roy Thomson Hall...and great bands that come: Smashing Pumpkins, The National... :)
It's safe (unless you live in places like Scarborough (haha....kidding for anyone that lives there)
The bad: Winters...they're long and cold!...Snow is only good for like a day, 5 months of the stuff gets depressing:P
and GEESE! they seem to be taking over! what a stupid bird to have as OUR COUNTRIES BIRD!
Whats good :
We are an island, and therefore you are never more than 15 minutes from the beach, whe have miles and miles and miles of beautiful dunes and some parts have what is called 'singing sand' it sings as you walk on it. We also have 18 or more golf courses, lots of things for tourists (and islanders posing as tourists) to do, its great to live here in the summer! We have TONS of big name concerts here and this is the place to be in canada in July!! All the people who live here are uber friendly and laid back. most would give you the shirt off their back if you asked for it. We're known for our 'RED' soil.... yep, its actually red and oh so beautiful!
Whats bad : There are only 2 bridal boutiques on the Island!!! So you dont have much of a chance of making your wedding unique. There is NO place to buy the necessary bridal things... only what the have at Walmart or Michaels.
The winters are rotten here.... everything slows down and half of the stores close after the tourists leave the end of October. We're known for our pot holes... since we're an island we dont have granite or slate... our roads shift a lot turing the frost so we get tons and tons of potholes... which means tons and tons of road construction during the hotest times and nicest travelling times of the summer.
I'm in bham,al.
The good is we know what type of weather we're having every season. winter...not too cold, summer....HOT as crap, fall...mild, and spring....wet yet still pretty.
the bad......IT'S HOT AS CRAP IN THE SUMMER. It's also sorta boring.
Lived in NY for 12 yrs
and now in GA for 3 yrs
The Good: It's the capital of Alberta, with tones of shopping- Our city had the largest mall in North America!!!! Because of the oil our economy has not suffered from the recession...yet. Edmonton is also known as the city of festivals and champions.
The Bad: The festivals are the same each year. We have about 6-7 months of winter, and all we have to do is watch hockey- if your an Oilers fan! It's pretty cold and miserable through out the winter.
After we are married, we are re locating to the West Coast- Vancouver!
AND potholes are horrible here. Construction everyone all summer long!
Another bad thing about where I live....LOVEBUGS! OMG they are the most horrid little insects! During the breeding months I have to wear a bandana around my mouth and nose while i am cutting the grass because they will fly up your nose or in to your mouth YUCK! Plus when you are driving down the road they hit your car and there are so many of them that it sounds like it is raining. The worst part is trying to get them OFF your car!
I love in Toronto, Ontario Canada. What I love about it is I love big city living. I love being close to the city, the hustle and bussle of i tall, taking walks along the lakeshore and that all day and all night long there is something to do and I love the way the city looks lit up at night. I love being surrounded by people with people all around and I love the shopping malls LOL. I also love the changing seasons. I love being able to experience all seasons!
the thing that stinks about Toronto is that we get a lot of humid really sticky weather, with smog alerts quite often in the summer. other than that I can't complain I love it here:)
All together now: where?!
Merritt Island is where the launch pads for NASA and the Kennedy Space Center are. Every time a shuttle launches, I'm sitting at home watching my windows rattle. What I love? I have miles of orange grove to one side, and it always smells beautiful. I have miles of nature reserve to the other side, and I get some of the coolest wildlife in my yard (big turtles, cranes, a nest full of baby screech owls!) I'm three miles from the beach. My town is a nice place for a family. I have security passes to NASA and the Port Authority. We have a bunch of cool little museums (like the Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum and the Astronaut Hall of Fame!) My first date with my husband was going to the beach at night to watch the cruise ships, all lit up and sparkling, as they drifted off to sea.
The thing that stinks about my town is that when shuttles launch, the place is hell on eath! Tourists stop in the MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY to watch it. You can't get food anywhere because all of the restaurants are stuffed with visitors, the roads are crammed, and then if the shuttle gets launched, everyone who paid to come see it is pissed. Also, HURRICANES. We've never been hit directly, but the rain causes massive flooding... You will see my husband and I piling sandbags against our fences to protect our house, which is only nine inches above sea level. (Not kidding. We used to have competitions in elementary school where we would dig in the playground sand and see who could hit water first. It was usually only about a foot down. The only below-ground cemetaries are in places that have been specifically tested to make sure the ground is deep enough - all other places MUST be above ground or you'll bury your loved one in water!)
Also... Apollo 13 and Armageddon both filmed here.
I pretty much hate Ottawa, but probably will never leave
What I like about Ottawa is that all of my family is here and our summers, which are so short, are hot.
What I hate about Ottawa is...
brutal death winters that are freezing and long + ice storms *ugh
no shopping at all
ugly and boring scenery (compared to beautiful places that I have been like cali and florida)
no beaches, only dirty lakes
apparently not having a hobby lobby is a bad thing....we NEED one of those, it sounds amazing!!
I know there are more things but thinking about it makes me depressed lol 2 of my BMS and best friends are leaving me for Toronto, which as the Toronto ladies have mentioned...is pretty awesome :)
I am a little bummed, I'm going down to Washington DC for the weekend to see my best friend. This weekend is "Taste Of Syracuse" in the heart of downtown Syracuse. I go every year. They block off several blocks in the city and set up vendors from local restaurants, pubs, bars and retailers. Each tent sells appetizers of their main dishes for like a $1.00 and they have concerts and all the wineries come out and sell wine slushies and samples of all of their delicious wines. Annnnnd I'm going to miss out this year. Oh well!!
Oh and in case you didn't know we have Syracuse University Men's Basketball. :o)
Simply amazing. We love going up to the hill and going to the Carrier Dome to watch the 'Cuse play some ball.
Did I mention that I love where I live?
And of course I'm with you about the worst thing being HURRICANE SEASON!!!!
I'm from PA, so I'm glad I haven't seen or shoveled snow for about 3 years.
Good = The film industry, stunning scenery when it's sunny, you can ski and sail within 1/2 hour of each other, Sushi is amazing, my family is here, 2 hour drive to the Seattle Outlets.
Not so good = apart from this year, it rains a lot, real estate is overpriced, every other person is gang affiliated or a drug dealer (only a slight exaggeration), very pretentious (plastic surgeons are making a fortune), shopping is expensive.
Pros:
The state fair is one of the top 10 fairs in the US and the food is to die for... but not if your on a diet : ) tehe. Everything is "on a stick" and my fav. is snickers on a stick!!!!!
We bring in over 1+mill visitors to the fair EVERY year... and that number grows. I also love that my favorite bands and singers ALWAYS come to Iowa : )... Kenny Chesney and Hinder...
We have lazerfest (tons o rock bands, big and small names)... Kid Rock came last year to lazerfest and that's why I refused to go... I can't stand the man. lol...
Great places to camp
Adventureland theme park
Cons:
the nasty snow and freezing cold weather. last winter was brutal!!!
But I sure do miss my south : (
There does seem to be a HUGE gathering of Canadian brides though :) After reading about peoples towns in Canada....I'm thinking i might want to take a vacation up there next year!
I'm from Virginia (the state as a whole is very beautiful). The state has a lot of history from battlefieds to wineries to the home of several presidents. We get the 4 seasons (although lately it seems to jump from Winter to Summer without any Spring haha) Where I live the Mountains are anywhere from 2-4 hours to the west (BEAUTIFUL), the beach is 2-4 hours to the North/South East and DC is 20 mins from me. There are wineries all over the place! Let's start with the Mountains. Beautiful drives, great B&Bs, and lots of camping opportunities. There are also plenty of natural wonders and there definitely isn't a shortage of skiing in the winter. Can you tell I love the mountains? The Beach---there is Ocean City, MD, Virginia Beach, VA, and Outer Banks, NC---all within a day's drive. Plenty to do and places to stay. DC--how could you forget DC. The cherry blossoms are beautiful in the Spring, tons of monuments and museums, and the 4th of July fireworks rock--not to mention it's the Nation's Capital. Oh and we tons of concerts at various pavillions around the area.
Now for the bad: Where I live traffic is a nightmare--there isn't any getting around it. It could take you 45 mins to go 12 miles. Don't even think about hitting the highways during rush hours and on Friday rush hour starts around 2 and lasts until 7 on some highways. Politics are everywhere---yuck. There are TONS of people everywhere---drivers are horrendous. Unfortunately to make money you either have to live in the city (bleck bleck bleck) or commute to work for 2 hours one way (so not healthy and not fun either!) In the northern part it is very expensive to live (even the housing market in the good areas hasn't been hit with the down economy) but then again you can drive an hour and be in affordable housing---but once again to make the moeny to live in the house you have to commute....not worth it!
I'm from Chicago! Chi-Town windy city!
The Good: Big city with lots of museums, theatres, restaurants , sport activities etc. We have one of the best public transportation systems that will take you from one end of the city to the other. Being by lake Michigan we enjoy beach time. Always something going on from Taste of Chicago to Blues Festival to Summer concert series at Grant Park! President Obama lived here!
The Bad: the weather, its june and like 50 degrees today next week can be 90+, the humidity in the summer makes you sweaty! one of the highest retail taxes!!!!!! and all the damn political drama and political corruption!
I shall have to see if they have one of these Hobby Lobby's in Buffalo or somewhere, everyone on here always seems to be finding such great stuff!
Luckily, I'm not from here, my moms family is from Mobile and Meridian, MS. My Dad's family lives so far in the boon-docks it's not on the map!
I love living in Alabama, wouldn't trade it for anything in the world!
ROLL TIDE!
I've lived in kentucky pretty much my whole life except for a couple years as a child when we moved to Tn. Although now I live about 3 hrs from where I grew up. Northeast ky.
Its neat cuz I live by the ohio and west virgina border, I can be in either state in 20 minutes.
i do live in a small town ...fortunatly pretty close to bigger cities, but it sucks when you have to get on the interstate just to go to walmart!
I love living on my island...most of the time...lol.
The good about Barbados... is that we have year round Summer...it is always warm so we can go the beautiful beaches anytime we want.. the food is great and spicy..has anyone had Fish Cakes before? We have Crop OVer which is our local festival, very similar to Carnival with lots of music and beautiful costumes....August every year...
Now the not so good...it is small too small..pop of 280000 approx. it is too far from the US and Europe, plane tickets are expensive to travel even to our neighbours. Wedding supplies are limited and expensive...boo.
But I am grateful to live here.
The good: I live right near the highway so I can be in Toronto in 30 minutes, but it's nice to live in a smaller city, away from the hustle and bustle of Toronto. Shopping is great here, and summers are not too hot, but not too cold.
The bad: mosquitoes, and very long cold winters.
I love it here. Some may be surprised to know we are not all about the outback, jumping on crocs saying silly things like throw another shrimp on the barbie and wearing cowboy hats and we dont' call EVERYONE mate! ; ) ... although it is really beautiful in the out back, and we do have man eating crocs and talk funny to some...we do have cities and beaches etc.
The only thing I would say that frustrates me about being in Australia is in regards to wedding planning is that we don't have many really really really old buildings to choose from to hold weddings, we have some but not enough in my state... but besides that, I am very happy with my Island Home.
B.xx
I am a Canadian marrying an Aussie, so we are having the wedding in his hometown of Perth - a really beautiful laid back city. It is wonderful here!
My favourite thing about the city is how balanced and happy all of the people here are - even the ones who live for their jobs. The city itself if gorgeous as there is miles of beach, a beautiful, massive, inner city park and the gorgeous river that runs through the middle.
My least favourite thing about Perth is the fact that nothing is open late hours or Sundays. Since I come from Canada I am used to stores being open all the time, and shopping here requires way too much planning ahead just to get the necessities!
The worst thing is there is just not much to do other than beachy things. The shopping scene isn't that broad but we've got most everything listed in these comments such as Hobby Lobby, joanns and target :)
/aduated in the big ol town of Dunlap Iowa, population: about 1,100 or so. but now my FH and i live in Council Bluffs Iowa cuz I am going to college here . will be done in December with a culinary arts degree!! can't wait!!!!! every mans dream right?? a woman who can cook!! lol.
Pros: Small town, everyone knows everyone everyone's nice
Cons: boring as shit!! lol not much to do. but sence we are only a bridge away from Omaha Nebraska... there's a lttle more to do.
