Indian Bridal Lehenga Cholili Co

For the Indian community in Brooklyn’s Flatbush neighborhood, it was celebration time. Post-marriage, it was time to bid adieu to the eldest daughter of one its most well-known members, and a community-pillar, Mr. Vedant Sharma.

Clad in a traditionally striped lehenga and an embroidered choli, his youngest daughter was busy perfecting the floral-decorations (the flower rangolis) on the floor. She was both, elated and sad as the day approached for she knew hers was the next marriage on the cards, but she was certain to miss her sister, her only companion from the very beginning. Born deaf and dumb, she knew it was only her elder sister, who could understand not only actions, but also read her mind inside-out.

Trying to steer away all the depression away from her mind for the moment, she stands up from her crouched position, takes a step back and appreciates herself for the floral-rangoli job well done. Fixing her lehenga to position with an air of confidence, she pulls out a small pad from within her choli, a pad that had all the things to be done jotted down on it, one after the other. To match the designs of delivered Salwar-Suits with the order, was her next task on the list, and from the way that she hastily headed indoors, it was evident that the task, like the floral-rangoli, would be carried out with the same amount of speed and perfection.

As a student of fashion designing, it was easy for her to sort out Salwar-Suits. What still wasn’t easy was to imagine and accept the huge vacuum in her life that would be created the very moment, her elder sister left the house for her in-laws. She recollected all those moments, when her sister would treat her day in and day out only in return for a bit of her help at creating the finest of traditional lehenga choli designs for their family’s online Indian ethnic wear boutique across the street.

She was almost done with the sorting and matching assignment, when her eyes fell on the last designer lehenga choli in that bundle. It seemed to her that she had seen the piece with the same patterns and textures on her sister a lot of times. So, she pondered upon the reason behind a similar purchase.
