Wedding Reception
HELP!

Money is so tight right now that I am having trouble imaging us even having a wedding. Darryl has been laid-off for several months now and is having trouble finding a new job. I was sick for the end of July and the entire month of August. Was in the hospital 2x. UGH! It was aweful and so we had no income coming in. Meaning goodbye savings. :~(
Anyhoo! Was just wondering if any of the brides out there have ever heard of anyone having a potluck style reception? How about a dessert reception? Appetizer reception? I don't think we can afford a whole meal or buffet. I am freaking out a whee bit. HELP!!!!!!!

All of those things are options.

Just don't be like VintageGlamBride09 and ask people to pay for their own meals.

Seriously, a potluck wedding could be totally fun. Encourage guests to bring their "family secret" recipe, or their ethnic food, or whatever else. Have little index cards for them to write what each thing is.

As for the dessert or appetizer receptions, yes! I originally considered a dessert reception, but changed it when my dad was diagnosed with diabetes. I did, however, have an hors d'oeuvres reception, and everyone loved it. I wouldn't change it for a buffet or plated dinner any day! Mini-bites are awesome.

Have fun with your day and happy planning!

Any of your options are good ideas. I think people will appreciate a potluck reception because they know you'll serve food they'll actually eat. Look at possibly a BBQ reception too. Another inexpensive option is serving pasta. There are lots of ways to cut costs on food for your wedding. Ask your relatives to help you purchase and prepare enough food for your guests.

I'm having a family friend make a few big batches of chowder as the main course. (Fish chowder, I live on the Atlantic Coast) Then all of my family members are bringing a salad (pasta, rice, etc) and I'm also having meat trays with rolls, and fruit and veggie trays.

I think you can do it economically!
I was even thinking about getting a company come and roast a whole pig. They only quoted me $6 per person!

The most important thing to do is to stick to your buget and have fun. I have been to many many appetizer/finger food receptions.  And if you have your wedding at an odd time of day (not a meal time) you can totally get away with only having cake and punch.  My cousin had a reception with only cake an punch and it was a very nice wedding. If you really want say an evening wedding with dancing and what-not, I don't see anything wrong with the pot luck idea, it may even be fun to include your guests by having them bring a dish. Whatever you decide will be lovely and I really feel that your family and friends will understand considering your recent bad luck.  (ps-please forgive all the mis-spellings in this message. Spelling is not my strong point hehe)

My brother attended a wedding that was a potluck reception that was held in a barn! It makes for a very informal reception but that is exactly what I like! I am having a BBQ for my reception.
