Photography was one of my splurge items (photos & food were mine). We are paying a little under $4000. I'm sure you'll be able to find quality pics at a more affordable price. It will just take research. Try to find someone new in their business. My original photographer (for my destination wedding that we canceled), was only going to charge like $800 because she was building a portfolio. Good luck!!

We paid $4000 for ours. This is the one thing that I told myself I would splurge on..because the wedding will be such a blur I want b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l pictures so that I can remember the memories for years to come...So we won't have designer flower arrangements, but I will have awesome pics.

Yes, this is probably one of the biggest expenses.  I found one guy and he want 10,000.  I did ALOT of research and I found someone for under 1,500.  Talk to them and see where you can cut corners.

We're getting a package for $3600. It includes engagements with prints, bridals with prints, a 40 page album, a 40 page parent's album (clone of first album), high res digital negatives with copyrights, and 8 hours on the wedding day. I do agree that it's expensive, but you may not remember every detail of your day afterward. Having a good photographer helps preserve those memories so they will last a lifetime. I did find some great deals on photographers when we went to the bridal shows. I didn't end up picking them since I had a good referral from a friend for mine.

YES photography is very expensive but its a very important part of your big day. I was kinda in the same scenerio as you when it came to spending top dollar and being practical. I finally booked my photographer last night and I am so happy that his prices arent as high as I first realized a photographer would be. I got his smallest package (which the only difference is that he doesnt shoot the bridal and engagement photos) for $750 and this includes full coverage and rehearsal dinner photography and a DVD. I found him on craigslist too...so keep hunting the perfect one is there somewhere you just have to keep hunting.
Good luck!

We were lucky b/c we got our photo and video done for around $1,300.  It wasn't the best and you get what you pay for but it works just as good.  We have all the rights to the photos and video.  That included the engagement, bridal, wedding, and reception.  That doesn't make you a cheap bride, just do what you can in your budget - Do Not break your bank!
Find a photographer that can cater to your needs.  They do have options A La Carte!    A lot of people say to not skimp on the photos but if you can't afford it , there is nothing wrong with paying the littlest package or anything that will fit your budget!

I searched and searched for a photographer for like a year (no exaggeration, I've been engaged for 2 1/2 years, lol), and FINALLY found an amazing photographer that is shooting our wedding for unlimited time, all photos on a DVD unmarked, two photographers, and a DVD of 20 edited photos with effects, it is costing us $1000. Soo many quotes I got were $3000 +, no way was I willing to pay that, even if they won an emmy, lol. Just keep searching. Call up potential photographers and see if they will do a custom quotation that fits within your budget. If they want your business, they will be very willing to work with your budget.

my photographer gives us 6 hours, 2 photographers, free shots for rehearsal dinner to meet everyone, we own the shots to reprint them anywhere, everything is high resolution on DVD, he brings a laptop, and a printer and displays pictures so people at the reception can have him print out pics on the spot for very cheap (like a few bucks for 5x7), and he will do touch ups as well, and he was $900.

I pretty much called or e-mailed every photographer in our area (which was at least 30 or so) to get a price quote...and YES photographers are extremely expensive!!  But if you just keep doing you're research and take plenty of time to compare prices and what all is included, then you should be able to find one who will work with you within your budget.  Our photographer (who was actually my top pick just based on seeing his work before I even found out his prices!!) is only going to charge us about $650 for 4 hours of footage (our ceremony and reception are in the same place so we didn't feel that we needed too much extra time), a 20 page coffee table album, a CD with all the images so that we can take them anywhere to have them reprinted (which was an absolute must for me before deciding to hire anyone), and a $50 print credit for 8 x 10's or larger printed from his studio.  We have a very tight budget, so for us this was perfect and if need be, we can always add an extra hour of time for another $100, which is still very reasonable!!  If you find a photographer you just absolutely love, I would suggest that you find out if they will work with you to stay within your budget (meaning possibly customizing a package for you with exactly what you do need, and cutting out anything that you don't really want or need)!!

I don't think it makes you cheap.  My FH and I don't exactly have a huge budget.  Our photographer is costing us just $900.00.  I know that sounds really cheap.  We get her for 6 hours instead of the whole day and we also get the CD and printing rights plus an album and a bunch of enlargements.  The reason we got such a good deal is 1) we booked really early so got '08 rates for an '09 event. 2) she is quite young and therefore less well-known, so she charges less.  Her photos are amazing and she is great- so easy to talk to, and her style matches the style of our wedding beautifully.  Prices will vary based on where you live, I know that if you live in a city you're paying WAY more than otherwise, likewise if you live in the states.  If there is a college or University nearby you might want to look into their photography program.  As a Fine Arts graduate, I can tell you there are TONS off gifted photographers coming up through the ranks in such programs who would jump at the chance to photographer your wedding at a great cost.  Just be sure to see some of their work first.  Good luck!

Luckily my FH's Uncle is a professional photographer and is doing it as his wedding gift to me. I know $1,500 is an average price though. It's worth the expense since the photos will last a lifetime. If you are going to splurge on one thing, let it be the photographer. I wouldn't look on craigslist either. Too many amaturs claiming to be pros. ;)

Ours will run about $5000... all worth it! It's one of my 'big three'... rings, photography and venue/food... everything else comes secondary. I'm totally willing to put in more money for all of those things that will last.

I haven't found a photographer yet. I haven't done much research but my fav by far is Andrew Reilly (andrewreilly.com), he charges $3200 for 7 hours if I recall correctly. The price seemed a bit high to me and my dad pretty much said it was insane. I am going to a demonstration for The Pros since they're so cheap, but I haven't heard good things about them so I'm not getting my hopes up.

I know what you mean. I found a photographer I loved and no one seemed to compare to them. But they were so out of my price range. I begged my parents and so they are going to be paying. But we are spending $3000 for ours. So that is the most expensive thing we are having at the wedding. Our reception is even cheaper than that. But we are having three photographers, unlimited hours that day, a coffee table book, and the rights to the cd with about 4000 images on it. I wanted to have perfect photos, so I knew it wasn't going to be cheap.
