The Proposal
As unconventional as we are
My fiance, J, is a soldier in the US Army.
I am a high school English teacher. Our backgrounds couldn't be more different -- he spent his childhood hunting and camping in the woods of Wisconsin. I grew up wining and dining on the beaches of West Coast Florida. While I was enjoying my final years of college at the University of Miami, he was fighting for our country in Iraq. He's a little bit country, I'm a little bit rhythm and blues. You get the picture. We're an unconventional pair, and yet we get each other in a way that most people simply can't understand. We've found a rare happiness together and our shared interests far outstrip our differences. Naturally, our engagement was unconventional as well. We'd just enjoyed a fantastic day out with friends and we were more than exhausted. As we lay in bed, he started to say something a couple times, and then stopped himself. Finally, exasperated, he said "I can't take it anymore. I have to ask." He went on to tell me how much he loves me, how happy we make each other, and how surprising our relationship has been for both of us. He finally said "I know I have your heart -- but I want everyone to know that you have mine. I was going to wait, but if I don't ask now, I'll end up asking in the line at the grocery store beacuse I'm about to bust." He asked and I said yes. We are nothing if not honest and I love that his proposal reflected that honesty. I am so happy -- and I wish every bride out there the happiest of weddings! |
