Ask a Question
Am I crazy for wanting to deconstruct my dress?

I keep looking at the photo of my dress on me and want to add major touches to it:

1. Sweetheart the neckline.
2. I already planned to place a petticoat to give it some more body.
3. I want to chuck the Satin sash and replace with a thin jeweled sash.
3. Place the jeweled sash lower on the waistline.
4. Add removable cap sleeves.

I love how the last two dresses fall. If I could afford so I would have opted for that last dress. So basically I am looking for a more A-line look where my dress leans more towards the Empire waist style. Don't get me wrong I love my Casablanca 1900 but after going over my options I have seen from other brides, I am thinking this is the way to go! I pray my tailor is amazing!

You know what, I'm the girl that wound up with 2 dresses!! I bought the first one because of the low price and said oh I'll add this and take away that and do this and in the end I had to ask myself will it still be the same dress>>??  I was going crazy over it until I finally went back out dress shopping and found EVERYTHING I wanted in the dress, no alterations need besides a hem.  I had to realize that I didn't get what I really wanted so I was never going to be happying with my first one.  I sold the dress and now I'm soooo happy.  Just give it some thought on if it's a whole new dress your really looking for, if not.  Go for it and make it your own it will be a dress that no one will ever have that would be the cool part!! Good luck and keep us posted.

As a bride who wore this beautiful dress on their wedding day, here is my opinion =)

a} I changed mine to a sweetheart neckline - although my seamstress did a horrible job and it hardly looked like a sweetheart neckline {rather a uneven straight line at best lol} I definitely think this dress looks amazing in a sweetheart neckline. I had found a great inspiration picture of another bride who turned hers into a sweetheart neckline and it was all that more gorgeous!

b} I definitely think you could change the sash to an embroidered one, but even in the simplicity of the style of the dress, I think the lace and beadwork is so amazing I personally wouldn't want to take away from it. I did consider however a feather flowers Alfred Sung brooch that practically looked like it was part of the dress. See my page {I think possibly page 2 or 3} for that idea if you'd like =)

c} I am not sure how they could change the height of the sash or waist, but could it have been done, I definitely would have considered taking it down a bit more so it wasn't so empire "ish" waisted. I am Portuguese and a bit "hippy" or "curvy" if you will and looking at the pictures in some shots it made me look super thin in relativity to my hips which looked extra hippy.

d} the cap sleeves are a rather pretty addition should you choose =)

Good luck deciding what to do ... I am sure your tailor can pull off everything you want!!!!

I wore a custom version of this dress, same as the pictures, just with short sleeves.
I wore a crinoline, just a medium one, but tried it on wtih an even fuller one and it was lovely.

I'm not sure you can do much about the waistline, as there is a defintie line where the material changes under the sash, but a seamstres would be able to let you know very quickly.
Have you considered adding a thin line ofjewel work to the existing sash? that way it wouldn't die out amidst the other beading, or clash with it.

I agree with Amiee about the sweetheart, I've seen pictures and it is beautiful on this dress.

I don't think there's nothing wrong with the alteration you want to make. I think the changes would be great. Do what makes you happy. You want to love the dress you're in on your wedding day :-)

Thanks girls! This is a tough one - I will wait to hear what the seamstress has to stay - the dress comes in sometime in January!
