Ask a Question
When do you start trying on gowns?
Ok since my FH and I aren't getting married unti June 09, when should I start trying on wedding gowns? Obviously I've already started the wedding planning and when school of out I will be planning our engagement party in June. I've been looking on website to get a idea but I'm not sure when to start going to bridal stores to try gowns on.

Hi!   I'm getting married in June of 2009 and actually already found my dress this past winter.  I'd recommend going whenever...you're going to need time to order it and get fittings done.  It's never to soon to start looking!  Plus, I've found the dress kind of sets the mood for the whole event and can help with planning other aspects of the wedding as well.

I would try some on see what styles look on you the best. Some people will try on different designers. It appears Maggie Sattero is pretty popular with the other girls on here. I also tried on Mori Lee and Mon Cheri dresses and liked them a lot. I end up finding mine at a bridal store from PC mary's and research the internet and bought mine cheapier at house of brides.com. If you find something you can keep an eye on it and perhaps buy it way cheapier down the line. OR you have tons of time til after the summer when girls start selling their dresses online and perhaps you might be able to buy two different gowns.

I'm getting married in June '09 as well and I went 2 weeks after I got engaged! Didn't think I would find anything, but found a couple that I love.  All the bridal shops say the earlier the better!

I got engaged in Oct 07. Wedding is May 09. I tried on dresses two weeks ago to see which styles look good on me. I tried on the mermaid, ballgown, a-line, column, trumpet and dropped waist styles about 2 dresses in each. I gotta say the ballgown style is HEAVY if you're getting married when its going to be hot it might be too much to carry that sucker around. Typically a salon will need 6-8 months to order your dress, unless you plan to buy off the rack.

I didn't start looking until about 6 months out. I think it's good for you to try some on to see what kind of styles you like, but the longer you have the dress, the more that can happen to it. I would calculate 2 or 3 months for alterations and a month or two for ordering it. And if you are doing bridal portraits, you have to plan to have your dress ready for that. But the longer it sits in your closet (like mine is right now) the more it can get messed up.... I would have prefered to wait longer so I wouldn't have to worry about it. But my dress was an awesome find and I couldn't have ordered it, so I had to bring it home.
