Ask a Question
when to start looking at BM dresses? anyone coming across any problems?

So I am excited to start looking for Bm dresses with my girls, but my original plan was to wait until March or April when the wedding was about 6-7 months away. My main reason was to make sure nothing happened as far as weight loss/gain before the wedding that would cause problems for my girls with their dresses. A few of my BMs mentioned wanting to lose some weight before the wedding, so I figured waiting awhile would give them some time. However, a few surprises have arisen! My future SIL just found out that she is pregnant and due in July (3 months before the wedding). So naturally I am ecstatic for her and her husband! But I eventually realized that this might make BM dress shopping a little tricky! No matter when we get the dresses, we won't be able to guarantee that the dress will fit her the way she wants it to until after she gives birth and sees how her body becomes afterward. She is naturally a petite woman so I don't expect her to gain weight all over, probably just in her belly area [lucky!!] haha

ALSO, my older sister is trying to get pregnant and I'm very happy for her because this is something that she has wanted for a very long time! she wasn't ever sure she was going to be able to have children due to health issues but is now getting help from a specialist and told me that she hopes I won't be upset if she is "very pregnant" for my wedding. of course not, i'll be soo excited! so, if she has the luck we're all hoping for [and gets pregnant within the next few months or so] she could be "very pregnant" for the wedding! haha...so yet again comes the problem with getting the BM dresses. so i could potentially have two BMs at different stages of pregnancy while trying to find dresses...help!! what would anyone suggest? anyone running into anything like this? I'm not exactly sure when is too early or too late to BM dress shop and now I think this is something I'll really have to start thinking about! I don't know exactly how long it usually takes to get dresses fitted and when would be too late to take care of fittings for my BMs changing bodies!

i hope i don't come off as selfish because I am super excited for both my FSIL and my sister!! i just worry too much sometimes about little details!

I also have a bm who is trying to get pregnant...and if she gets pregnant soon she will be very pregnant at the wedding!! lol... I don't care about it, I just don't want to put more stress on her about anything.

I would go shopping at  least 6 months before the wedding to make sure there's enough time to get the dresses in for the wedding. For your FSIL I would order a size larger than what her regular pre-baby size is, and then 3-4 weeks before the wedding she can go to get it altered. So if she hasn't lost all the weight by the wedding she won't feel uncomfortable trying to squeeze into a dress that is her pre-baby size. For your FSIL, if she does get pregnant...same thing, order the dress 2-3 sizes larger (ask the bridal store what they recommend), and then depending on how big she is 3-4 weeks before the wedding, she can go and get it altered to fit her body.

Well said, amcs.  You could also go shopping now with your FSIL, while she is only "a little pregnant", so she can try on dresses that will actually fit her.

I have a similar situation!  My sister just found out she is pregnant and her due date is June 28th...my wedding is July 4th!!  talk about close!  because of complications from her first delivery, she will most likely need to be induced and have a c-section.  We are hoping she will be induced around June 25th, giving her only 9 days to recover before the wedding.  She was so worried to tell me but I am just so thrilled for her.  Of course I hope she will be able to participate in most of the wedding festivities but she will have a brand new baby so I can't expect too much.
as far as dresses go...I chose the colour and the girls chose their styles.  We are using the After Six line and they make a beautiful maternity dress that will be perfect :)

What you should do is wait and shop for the dresses as planned. You really wont know the size that the pregnant BM will need until very near the date anyway so you are better off waiting as nearer the time as possible. You can always get the other BM dresses and then get the pregnant BM or BM's dresses in the same color but not the style if you cant get it!
