The Proposal

Empire State, New York City

Well..........the proposal took place on a trip to NY in December 2007. We went to NY for 5 nights and on my birthday (14th Dec) my H2B was adamant that we went to the Empire State, which I was a little puzzled about as we had been there the year before! I thought he was trying to be romantic as it was my birthday he was acting a little strange and I did wonder!

Unknown to me a few days previous the day that we were boarding the plane from Ireland to Shannon. My H2B had brought a little sports bag to bring on as hand luggage (very strange for him I thought) but little did I realize that the only thing occupying this bag was the ring. He didnt want to put it into his suitcase for fear of luggage getting lost, he couldnt carry it on him as he would have had to take it out going through the metal detectors. So luckily for him we both were searched by different staff members at Shannon airport who wanted to check our bags. When he was asked to step aside the guy took the ring box out of the bag, to which my H2B was trying to tell him without drawing attention "whoa whoa buddy, put the box down please....." the guy realized suddenly what was happening and apologised and asked where I was to see if he had given the game away..........lol

Back to the night of the proposal, we are in the room I am actually ready before him for a change and am waiting for him, hes trying to distract me so he can take the ring box out of the bag. He asks me to check the heating (hello?! now I definitely think he has lost the plot) I humour him and turn away. We are walking the few blocks to get to the Empire State and I am nervous. There is (wait for it!) construction work being done on the lower level so he thinks oh my god its closed what am I going to do, I am thinking construction work? thats not exactly what I want to see when I am going up 80+ floors here people......

We get to the front its open........I can see the weight lifted from his shoulders..........go to the top................out onto the observatory deck....everywhere I go he is glued to me.......I am so nervous I am about to puke.......then he starts telling me how much I mean to him and then goes down on one knew........I am dying saying "no, no what are you doing, get up" I am panicking in case everyone sees lol I say yes. We quietly (phew) have a kiss and I am still sick to my stomach. I thank god that everyone didnt see until I hear.......bang bang bang on the window...there is a group of about 10 women inside all clapping....I nearly die! H2B said he thought I was going to say no and if I did he would have launched himself straight off the top : )

We leave the Empire State get to the elevator and as some of you know you have to wait for the elevator to be full before it goes.....who enters.....yes the 10 women who were clapping...I am thinking oh my god we have to go 80+ floors down here.......there is pure silence...........then one woman speaks "are y'all the couple that just got engaged?" I say "yes" H2B is nearly dying being in an elevator with 11 women, 10 of whom he doesnt know lol
They all congratulate us, want to see the ring and then tell Ian "you did good dude, you did real good"

When we get out of the elevator they start telling members of staff that we just got engaged.........I run lol

When we get to Times Square to go for a meal.......there is alot of clapping and shouting going on, a group of about 6 people are surrounding another couple shouting and drawing attention as they are their friends and the guy is down on one knee. I turn to H2B and thank him that he didnt do that to me!

So to the women that were in the elevator with us I am sorry now we never got a photo taken with you all as you will always be a part of our engagement story.......and to the couple who got engaged in the middle of Times Square on 14 Dec 2007 congratulations and you have one major pair of kahunas buddy.......LOL!
