Ask a Question
Ribbon and Cake... a bad mix???
So here it is, I really really like ribbon/bows on cakes, but i hate fountant(dont know if i spelled that right :S), but i have found cake pictures online that look like they are using real ribbon. My concern is that the oil from the icing ( we are using buttercream icing) will soak through onto the ribbon and make it look horrible. Have any brides seen real ribbon on cakes? did it turn out?? what do you all think? please let me know

They will use the plastic type ribbon to go around the cake or glue the cookie paper on the other side of the ribbon so that the ribbon will not absorb the frosting moisture. Ask your baker, I'm sure they've done this many times.  I like your ribbon cake choices.

The cake that we ordered has green satin ribbons wrapped around it (there's a picture of it on my blog).  It works just fine.  We saw it at the cake shop when we went for our tasting, from what I understand they can omit the icing under the ribbon so that it doesn't soak through if you are going with buttercream icing, or they have a layer of wax paper/parchment paper type stuff on the back of the ribbon to keep the oil from soaking through.
Ribbons on cake are so adorable!  You have great taste!

I don't know about it soaking through but i have seen real ribbon on cake and it looks funny when they cut the cake and the ribbon gets all bunched up at the bottom, that amy be a reason to use foundand just for the ribbon part. :)

the ribbon on my cake is made of icing...so that is something you might want to look into if you are worried about ribbon messing up your cake, or absorbing the frosting
