Traditionally, weddings have a unity ceremony with three candles, where the bride and groom both light the middle candle to symbolize their lives joining. In recent years, a trend that has been gaining popularity is the sand unity ceremony. There are 3 vases, 2 filled with whatever color sand you choose, and you pour them together in the middle vase symbolizing the same thing. I tend to like the sand ceremony better, it is unique and I think I would like that decorating our house as a keepsake rather than candles (since we already have lots of candles). The more I thought of it though, it seemed like it would be more for a beach wedding, although I have found videos of the sand ceremony on youtube of non-beach weddings. But, at my sister's wedding a few years back, she didn't have a unity ceremony at all. So, I was wondering how many brides are going to actually have a unity ceremony (is it a thing of the past?), and if you are, what do you plan to use to symbolize it?
