Wedding Gift Registry
Honeymoon registry? taboo?

So my FH will be 40 this year, and I'm 32... we've got stuff coming out of our ears at our own individual homes, and as most people do our age we have all the gadgets and gizmoes we like already.. I'm wondering how to ask people to just give us cash, or "gift" to us the money we want to use toward our home purchase... is that tacky?

I've gotten all sorts of mixed responses so far amongst my family, and although Patrick and I have registered at traditional places like Target and Dillards, what we really want is to (a) buy our own home and (b) have an awesome time on our honeymoon.. We are pretty frugal with our money and would really like to do something like go on some really cool adventures and "splurge" while we are vacationing on our honeymoon, and be in the position to purchase our home as easiest as possible.

So I will throw it out to you: Is it taboo to just ask for cash or set up one of those honeymoon fund registries and forgoe all the household stuff we could really just buy on our own? We of course will want some things for our new home, but we've got to be able to purchase it first!

Let me know what you think, and what sites you've used if you have personally done a honeymoon registry for your big day.

...and THANKS!

I dont think th honeymoon gift registry is tacky at all...in fact i think its a great idea! And it might surpirse you how many of your guests will give you money even if you dont specifically ask for it. A lot of them will probably wonder what to get two people who already have everything they need and they'll just decide to give you money bc its easier than finding a gift that you dont already have or dont need! :)

@littlelamb I think you are so right.. I went ahead and signed us up for honeymoonregistry.com and I'm in the process of having Patrick check out some of the packages there to decide where we want to go/ what fun excursions we want to do..

I'll keep you posted!

This is absolutely not tacky at all. I am 21 and just gradtuated from a two year college and now working and living by myself while FH is still living at home. I have furniture and all the kitchen and bathroom gadgets we need because of living by myself for the past (almost 3 years, thanks to parents and grandpa). However, we could use some serving trays and little things like that and one can never have too many towels. I found a site www.honeymoonfund.com and it seems to be just what you are looking for... Happy planning and CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Enjoy!

As a travel agent I’d have to say a honeymoon registry is an excellent idea. Some registries, like Sandals, even let you customize what you’re asking for so you can ask for a spa treatment, horseback riding, private candlelit dinner, etc.  That way your guests can pick what to contribute toward and that way it will feel less like they are just giving you money. The Sandals site even lets you create a personal page so that you can give your guest an inside track on your honeymoon plans and they will know what they are contributing towards.
Another great site is honeyfund.com.  I’ve had several clients that were very pleased with it.
