Ask a Question
How is everyone paying for their wedding??
So as my wedding draws near (only about two months left!) I'm getting more and more nervous about money issues. My FH and I are basically paying for this whole thing ourselves, but found that we're going to be a little short when it comes to paying for all the food. We're having 150 people, at about $20 a person. We've been paying out of pocket so far, but I think we're looking into getting a very small personal loan in order to cover the food expenses. I'm getting very stressed out because if the personal loan won't be able to happen, what do we do?? Are there any other ways you girls can think of (or are doing yourselves) to pay for wedding expenses??? Any creative, low-cost ways to pay for the little bit we will have trouble covering?? Thanks girls....you're the best!!!

UPDATE: My FH's parents are helping us out...at least to be able to put the food on a credit card, and then we'll pay if off. Luckily!!! We only have about a month to go....PHEW, that was close. I'm very thankful everything will be working out...thanks to all of you for your advice/stories! :)

My advice is....You could have just a cocktail reception with just small refreshments, cake and punch, or you could go for a buffet style with a choice of diffrent items. Sam's and Cosco's has alot of good refreshments by the bulk for cheap and reasonable prices. I think this idea will save you more.

thanks for your idea sweetp, but the cocktail reception only saves us $2 a person, and our location has its own catering and doesn't allow for people to bring in their own food...so I'm not sure what other options there might be....

Keep in mind that many of your guests will likely give you cash as gifts... and with 150 guests you could walk away with a large amount of money!

If you can't get a personal loan from a bank, you could use a credit card, or multple ones, or turn to one or a few of your parents.  If you are only needing the loan for a matter of days, it shouldn't be an issue.  As soon as you open all your cards  you can pay it back!

I'm sorry if that sounds tacky, but people are giving you money because they would rather see you use it for what you need instead of buy you a gift.  They are leaving it up to you to choose how to spend it.

Best of luck!

I'm sorry..but I don't really have any advice :( We are running into the same problem, but I guess that since our weddings are in Indy..we have to expect to pay more...blah. My friend is getting married in Muncie and it is SO much cheaper! Is there any way that yours or his parents would give you a small loan that you could pay them back with? That way you wouldn't rack up on interest and stuff. Unfortunately, you will prob. have to take out a loan..unless you win the lottery :) Haha! Enter in some bridal sweepstakes LMAO!

Is there any way you could sign on with a different caterer? There are a lot of good caterers out there that can do a great job for less than $20 a person, especially if you call around and don't say it is for a wedding. They will qoute a different price and you can tell them it is for a wedding later. Many privately owned local restaurants will also give you a great deal (that is what we did!).

OMGOSH! I'm SO comming to your wedding! YUMMMMMMMMMMY!  I want all of your cake! Haha...*Drool*

My fiance is paying for most of it.  His folks are paying for a couple grand.  My dad is paying for probaly half the guests to eat, at 26 bucks a person, for 100ish people!  Yeah, 60 guests turned into 100 mighty fast!  I'd suggest getting a personal loan and stretch it out for like say....10 years.  It will keep the payments low and you can obviosly pay tons off after the wedding with money as gifts.  You can use your car as collateral or whatever.
Best of luck!  I know how you feel about things adding up QUICK!

I recommend a small personal loan or credit card. Although to everyone else looking for advice, make sure you budget what you can afford well in advance so that this doesn't happen to you.

Also do not count on receiving a large amount of money. That's how you will run into more trouble....counting on something you don't have yet.

Is there any way to cut down costs somewhere else? Like rehearsal dinner? bridal party gifts? Look at all the stuff you haven't got/paid for yet and make some adjustments there.

Unless you're worried about not getting approved for credit I suggest getting the loan/cards opened as close to the wedding as possible since you have to start paying that stuff off right away. Be sure you have incoming income to make at least the minimum payment the first couple of months so that your credit doesn't get ruined with the start of your marriage.

I still do a little credit counseling here and there for friends so let me know if you have any questions in this aspect.

In my case, my fiancĂ© and me are taking care of the wedding.  We are doing as lay away payments. For example, everytime we get to our paydays we put some money down for the hall, the cake, the church, the dress, tuxedos, etc.  In that way we've been paying all the details of our wedding.  But we start with almost 2 years of anticipation, 'cause we're not rich people you know.  And that I think is clue.  Little by little but we're paying everything off and with time, too.  Time and have to go together to help you with the expenses of the wedding and other personal expenses too.
