Contemporary weddings convey simplicity and sophistication. They are bold, yet minimal, and untraditional with a twist. The key to planning a Contemporary wedding is to keep things unfussy, sleek, and making a statement within the simplicity. You can study the fashion magazines and the runways to see what is chic and current and incorporate those elements into your wedding. If you have a socialite’s taste but a not-so-fabulous budget, you can still incorporate Contemporary touches in your wedding without overspending. Your buzz words are "modern," "chic," "clean lines" and "current." For your location, think "Where would a character from Sex and the City get married?" If you have the budget to create your wedding décor from scratch, then the upper floor of a warehouse with large arched windows or an expansive loft space is ideal. If you have a smaller budget, a backdrop that conveys simplicity as well as sophistication, like an art gallery or trendy restaurant, would be a perfect choice.
Your Stationery: Designer invitations by popular fashion designers are a fun choice for a Contemporary wedding where modern drama and fashion are your key elements. Fashion your stationery with bold, clean fonts and perhaps even geometric designs and motifs. The great thing about Contemporary invitations is that you can create them inexpensively. Modern, mass production printing methods, or ready-made cards can carry off your Contemporary style with minimal fuss and cost.
Your Dress: This is your chance to be a supermodel for the day. Your wedding aisle is your runway so choose a dress that makes you feel like "working it." Check out the latest runway shows from New York, Milan and Paris online to see the newest looks in high fashion. Look for a dress that incorporates one of the trends and is flattering to your body type. A sleek, straight sheath silhouette is preferable to a gown that is full and romantic. Play with the necklines and dress details as these are the elements that will make your dress stand out.
Your Hair: Loose, sexy up-dos, contemporary buns, or long loose locks that are strategically tousled, are the crowning piece of a Contemporary bride’s look. The idea is to look sophisticated but not rigid. The drama that starts with the dress should continue to your hairdo. Clip-on hair ornaments can include a sparkly headband or a dramatic ornamental headpiece that pulls back long hair. It is a wise idea to indulge yourself and hire a hair stylist to create a style for you.
Hair is important because it will live in infamy in wedding pictures. If it’s not right, you could have pangs of regret every time you look at your wedding album. Strategic planning is necessary for a hairstyle that has any level of complexity to it. You will want to consider whether or not it will hold its own against the elements that time of year without someone having to follow you around with a can of hairspray and a brush all day. Then you will want to find a stylist who excels in the kind of style you want. You may have a regular stylist you love but you may have to step out on him/her and find yourself an up-do master. If you don’t feel comfortable two-timing your stylist for your wedding hairdo, then you will have to practice until he/she can do your hairstyle in his/her sleep.
Your Flowers: Choose tulips, orchids or daisies that are cut low and placed in glass square box vases. The colors should be monochromatic. Bouquets should be clean, sleek and streamlined. Consult with whoever is handling your wedding floral arrangements and he/she should be able to turn your favorite colors and styles into gorgeous wedding arrangements and bouquets that will match your overall Contemporary wedding.
Your Ceremony: In the fashion world, image is everything. Think of your wedding as an outward reflection of your current inner style or the current inner style you would have if you had a personal shopper and all the time and money in the world! Think of the things you like that make you feel most glamorous and make sure there are incorporated into your wedding. Tell your wedding planner that you would like to read your own vows, skipping the traditional style ceremony. You may consider having an artist draw a sketch of the two of you while you’re taking your vows. (Make sure he/she is off to the side and as discreet as possible.) The ceremony can be a more personalized and dramatic event in a Contemporary wedding.
Your Reception: Pretend you are Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, and look for the hottest trends in everything. Align this Contemporary style to your hor d’oeurves, your plates, your favors, your entertainment, etc. Remember that you are going for the current chic trends, but you have to love them! Don’t just pick the first trendy thing you see. Find a current trend you love and build a look around that. Your job is to keep yourself focused on being contemporary and fabulous but streamlined in style. You don’t want a mash-up of too many trendy things (e.g., a sushi chef, mojito bar and a magic show) because all of these elements could really clash and your reception would seem overdone. Your Cake: Think geometric and plan on a gorgeous square cake instead of a conventional round one, or serve individual small square cakes to guests. Again, you should have chic and clean lines in your cake decorations.
Your Photography: Work with your photographer to capture the architectural elements or location details that you would love to see in your wedding. The front of the museum could be your bridal party backdrop, or you might consider you and your handsome groom up against a metal wall of a warehouse.
Have a wonderful time discovering different elements of your environment that you can use as backdrops for your photos. This is a time you can get creative. You can even test out some of these backgrounds with your digital camera and discuss them with your photographer. With all of the new digital technology, it’s easy to have wedding photography that looks like a layout from your favorite glossy fashion magazine. Find a photographer that takes fashion pictures and sit with him/her in the weeks before the wedding with tear sheets of photo spreads, advertisements and editorials from your favorite magazines so the photographer can see the mood and the aesthetics that you would like to capture in your wedding photos. Ads for wedding rings or fashion layouts from bridal magazines can be wonderful inspirations.
Your Getaway: For a Contemporary getaway, go with the hot sports car or the motorcycle of the moment – whatever you see as the modern trend.

An Exotic wedding incorporates the sights and sounds of a faraway land. It can reflect your ancestral heritage or simply be a place that you love. Everything from the décor, to your dress and the food, reflects the experience of that location. Think, "Where would I get married if money were no object?" Dream big and then try to find a way to make your dream a reality. If you can’t go there, bring the flavor and style to you! Your exotic style is not limited to only exotic locations! Your buzzwords are "international fusion," "vibrant," "mysterious" and "cultural." It doesn’t matter if you are not actually going to an exotic location to get married. What matters is that you bring the sights and sounds of your Exotic style to whatever location you choose — even if it’s your own backyard!
