DIY coffee filter flower
This is how I did mine:
1. Buy/gather supplies: coffee filters, wooden skewers, scotch tape, food coloring, marker 2. Get a pie dish and fill with a little bit of water and add a few drops of food coloring. Add a coffee filter (or a few) to the water and let sit for a while. Take the coffee filters out of the water and lay flat to dry on a paper plate with a paper towel. 3. Find a scrap piece of cardboard or another paper plate (to make a stencil on). Draw four petals, each one a bit larger than the previous one. Cut out the four petal shapes. 4. Trace the petal shapes onto a dry coffee filter and then cut them out. 5. Take a skewer and use the marker to color the one end the same color as the petals. 6. Take one of the smallest petals and wrap it around the end of the skewer (where it's colored). Wrap it tightly around the tip making a point and then secure it with a piece of tape. 7. Start with the smallest petals and begin taping them around the point in a spiral, the largest petals go on last. 8. Take another skewer and gently seperate the layers a bit. I used a skewer for the stem because I'm making these flowers for the pomanders. If you make them for a bouquet or centerpieces you should use wire because the skewers won't bend. And if you make these for a bouquet you'll want to wrap the stem with green floral tape at the end. Some websites say to paint the skewers green but I would skip that step and just use the green floral tape at the end. Some websites also say to use the green floral tape on each individual petal as you tape them on but I would use clear scotch tape because it's cheaper and you can cover the clear tape at the bottom of the flower with the green tape when you're done. You can take a skewer or dowel and roll the edges of the petals back too, if you want. I used eleven of each petal size to make the flower in the picture. |

DIY Wedding
My first attempt
So here is my first attempt at making a coffee filter rose. I put the coffee filters in some water with food coloring and then let them dry before I cut out any of the petals, instead of painting it at the end. I also didn't "roll" down the edges because everyone really liked the flower just the way that it was. It took me about an hour to make one of these!

Anyone else dying their bubbles?
Now that we have our date finalized pretty much, (the wedding will be in August) and two possible locations for the ceremony and reception scouted out and a def. color scheme I feel like I can finally start planning.
I had to go into a local dollar store today to pick up a few party decorations for a family thing next week and I picked up a few things for the wedding! They had packages of a dozen bubbles for $1! I bought a couple boxes just because of the price. I was a little worried that the bubbles might evaporate or something before the wedding but I'm sure that they'll be fine and anyway I could always just re-fill the little bottles if I had to. Anyway, I thought that I would tie white and black ribbons onto each bottle and then I thought that I could dye the bubbles blue. I just used a drop of blue food coloring. Anyone else dying their bubbles? |

Changing our date
I was thinking about going with December 23, 2011 as our date but I've changed my mind. I sat and really thought about it and it just won't work for us. The cons are worrying about the weather, people might be too busy with it being two days before xmas, people might not have the money to come because it's so close to xmas, flowers are more expensive, vendors might be more expensive, it is just too close to xmas and FH found out that he would need an act of God to get vacation time at that time of the year. He just found out today that vacations are not approved for December usually ever. So that kind of sealed the decision to change the date.
We are going to talk about it tonight but he mentioned maybe we should look at the beginning of March. We only talked briefly but I suspect that he would have no problem at that time of the year taking a vacation. I know that since we are waiting two years anyway adding two or three months more isn't that big of a deal but I'm still a little bummed about it. ***UPDATE*** I still really want a winter wedding theme but December is out so now we are going to try for the last weekend in January. ***SECOND UPDATE*** We discussed a few different options last night and slept on it and then this morning we discussed it some more and decided on what we are going to do. We are going to have an outdoor summer wedding in August 2011. It will be a more laid back event now, no church or hotel reception, and that suits our personalities a lot better. I'm really excited to start actual planning now! |

Coffee filter roses
I just found a good tutorial on how to make coffee filter roses. I might try this out soon. I thought that I could make these roses for the pomanders for the church pews instead of getting them from a florist. The link: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=306807.0

Centerpiece idea
I could make really pretty DIY centerpieces using this kind of idea. I would paint the branches white or silver though and add some glitter to make them more wintery and then add some paper flowers or fake snowflakes to it.

Pew decorations
I think that I might have pomanders instead of bows on the pews in the church for decoration. These would be a good DIY project especially since I have so much time!

Ordered invitation samples
I just got one of the wedding invitation catalogs that I had requested, Rexcraft, and I ordered two sample invitations just to see what they look like in person.

Xmas ornament centerpiece
I think that this would be a good way to incorporate the season into my centerpieces. I like the idea of a floral centerpiece with a few ornaments mixed in or having candle centerpieces with a few ornaments scattered on the tables too.
