Ask a Question
" Sample Menu" or " Is Anyone Having 2 Caterers?"

We have been fumbling around with the menu for quite some time now trying to get the right mix of western and eastern foods. We are so short on time and I am starting to panic. I mentioned it to our venue's co-ordinator and she reccomended getting 2 caterers, and said that it happens often at our venue. I instantly thought this was a great idea but I don't know how that would work? Should I get one caterer to do appies and dessert and the other to do dinner? Or should I get them both to contribute to every course? And what would the logisitcs be... Our current working menu is as follows:

Appy options
1.Mediterrannean Platter (toasted pitas, hummous, tzatziki and brushetta).
2.Chicken Tikka Skewers (chutney, yogourt and hot dipping sauces).
3.Smoked Salmon (served on mini toasts, pea shoots and lemon caper vinaigrette).
4.Mini Brandade (salt cod and potato cakes with dill creme fraiche).

Salads
1.Mixed Summer Greens (grainy Dijon vinaigrette).
2.Spinach Salad (mushrooms, bacon and honey sherry vinaigrette).
3.Butter Leaf Salad (chèvre, toasted walnuts, red wine vinaigrette).
4.Tabouleh Salad (couscous with mint citrus vinaigrette).
5.Baby Potato and Green Onion Salad (creamy Dijon vinaigrette).
6.Penne Salad (pesto and sun dried tomato balsamic vinaigrette).
7.Shaved Fennel and Citrus Salad (citrus vinaigrette).

Vegetarian Dishes (We have a lot of West Coast Vegetarians coming)
1.Vegetarian Lasagna
2.Baked White Bean and Tomato Cassoulet
3.Caramelized Onion and Black Olive Pissaladiere
4.Tomato, Chevre and fresh Basil Tart

Entrees
1.Mediterrannean style Tomato Braised Chicken with Olives and Feta
2.Whole Baked Side of Salmon Loaded with fresh Herbs
3.Thyme Marinated Gilled Flank Steak BBQ Style
4.Curry Thai Beef

Starches
1.Basmati or Jamine Rice Pilaf Style
2.Thyme and Rosemary Roasted New Potatoes
3.Potato Gratin

For dessert we are thinking of an ice cream bar with toppings the guests can add themselves and then having a live chef making hot Thai- style tempura bananas to go with the mango and green tea ice cream. For our midnight snack we are having mini burgers and fries from our fave take out place delivered!!!

Its not a bad menu so far but the prob is that the Asian dishes are not "authentic" enough for me and I know our mostly indian guests will be particular about that.. And our caterer is struggling with the banana thing. I am thinking that a second Asian caterer could do the desserts and probably do some great appies too. Input anyone...?

could you get an Indian caterer and a Western one?  they could contribute to each course as you described.  i think this is the best option.  (love the menu btw!)

I think going with two caterers will be super pricey, because they both have to pay their staff.  That's double the wages for the same amount of time.

My friend was in this EXACT same situation when she got married.  They found a regular caterer who would do the "normal" stuff, and they gave him their Indian recipes that they wanted him to use.  He tried out the recipes beforehand, and it was lovely.  I had the indian food, and it was soooooo good.

Hey!   If pricing isn't a major concern, then you should definitely get two caterers.  I'd get two full menus for both guest.  I do think your "Indian" menu appears to be less "authentic."   It appears to be that way to me...so I'm sure it'll definitely be that way for the parents.  However, the fact that your serving beef (unless your muslim) goes far away from the norm.  So with that said it is your day and people will enjoy the food regardless.....even if it isn't exactly "authentic."

If you do choose to go with two I would get them together and figure out the menu together. Maybe they've even done this type of thing before. You can suggest what you wrote above and see what they say. The food sounds so yummy!
