Ask a Question
How far in advance did you start planning?

Just out of curiosity, how far in advance did you all start planning your wedding and did you already have the money saved for your wedding before you started your planning? Or are you paying for your wedding as you plan or your parents are paying?
Initially my FI and I were planning a 2008 wedding after only being engaged for 4 months but the money wasn't really there. So we decided to change our wedding date until next June 2009. We opened up a savings account strictly for our wedding. We are both contributing 40% of our monthly income to this account. My FI wants to have all of the monies saved before we start dishing any out. The good thing is that we will have time to plan our dream wedding and relish the idea of being engaged. I think this is best for us. What about you??

I started saving big chunks of my monthly paycheck as soon as we got engaged; but my parents are paying the biggest bulk of it, and his parents are definitely contributing.

I think it's wise to save the money first; no one wants to be in debt over one day!  (But it happens...)

I just started planning in January for my wedding in October of this year. I was engaged for a year just having fun before I started actually getting it together. I have done a ton of stuff in the past couple months... taking a long time is good for saving, it all depends on your circumstances! Good Luck with your planning :)

i started planning january of last year but that was because we were originally getting married december of last year.  i had already purchases my dress (which i still love thank god!) but i haven't really started planning for this wedding (in may) until last november.  it hasn't been too difficult considering i've planned this in my head since last january and of course i have my parents who have been wonderful enough to pay for the whole shindig.  i really have no idea i would get this done without some sort of help!

I got engaged May 25 2007. My wedding is in October of this year. I started planning in July.  I didnt want to be bombarded with stuff,so I tried to get thigns out of the wedding. We are fortunate that our parents are paying for the wedding, so we dont have to come out of pocket really. I do think your saving is so wise! I have many friends still paying for their wedding, YEARS after.. youg uys have a great  plan going:=)

We got engaged in October and I started planning in January for May of 09. We have 90% of our money and are now saving for the smaller things.

We are basically doing that same, but Ive started planning our wedding in January and will not get married until May 2009. We are paying for our own wedding. I like having over a year to plan and save. Plus I didn't want to be overwhelmed with only having less than a year to plan.

i got engaged in January and we are getting married August 1 2009 i started planning the first hour we were engaged but thats what i do im a planner and anyone that knows me knows that i plan waaaaaaaaaaay in advance for everything. My tax return came in end of feb so the begining of this month i went and paid halfon a dress half on a venue and ordered 300 dollars worth of things. I figured i might as well do them now while i have money and see things i want...who knows if they would be sold out later or discontinued. i know exactly the types of the things i want so i am just gonna get them as i see them. we also have a seperate account for our wedding. venues and photographers book up 3 years in advance here thats one reason while i booked the venue already and have started looking for a photographer.

I have been planning my wedding my whole life!! But I am not having it anything like I thought.
We got engaged the last week of november and are getting married in 2 months..... so I had/have 6 months to plan the big day.... It can be done in a very short amount of time. My sister did hers in 3 weeks!
I think if you have a good idea of what you want and start slowly looking into the cost of things set a budget and just go with it. buy a planner. I got one at Target for $12 it had things I never would have thought of in it!

Chase and I just recently got engaged. However, we've been talking about getting married for quite sometime but wanted to finish our Master Degrees first. We've been together for 5 years. We have a joint savings account for our wedding that was opened up about 6 months ago and I must say this was a very wise decision. We are paying 100% of our wedding. So I totally agree with what you all are doing, in the end you will be totally satisfied.

We started planning right away...Even though it's a little more than a year away we are off to a very good start. We are mostly paying for it ourselves. My parents can't afford to pay for it, but they are helping with some things... I set up an account and have been saving money and he has been saving money.  We pay for stuff as it's needed.
I never knew how expensive planning a wedding can be! lol but we are only planning stuff we can truly afford.

Thanks for the positive feedback, at first I embarrassed about pushing the wedding back but I agree saving money first is a wise decision.

We picked a date (18) months from the date we got engaged.  Sat down created a wish budget from our savings.  Transferred into wedding budget account.  $25,000.00
Now we have been doing things all along the process using our paychecks.(where we can) Once the day comes then we go into the monies we set aside for the wedding.  Hoping that we won't need to take more than about 8-$10,000 out at the end.
