Wedding Dress
Alterations/lace back

Has anyone had their dress altered from a zip closure back to a lace up back?
I am thinking of doing that with my dress (see pics)
I am nervous about it... but I do have a great seamstress. She already has a ton of alterations to do to it anyways. I need it shortened and bustles put in. I also need the cap sleeves fitted smaller.
When I got my dress back in the fall, I was in the best shape of my life. I had just finished the police academy and I was in great shape.
I have since gained about 8 lbs, which is easy to lose, but when I tried on my dress a few weeks ago, I couldn't zip it up! I panicked, although again, I know I can lose that weight.
But, I was just thinking of how much more comfortable my dress would be if it were a lace up back. Let it in, let it out! I think it would be pretty, too. I have always liked the look of the lace up back.

Do you think it would look nice?
Do you think it would take away from the detail on the back?
Anyone have any idea of approximate cost of doing this alteration?

Thanks in advance for your input!!!

I think it would love very pretty! But I'm bias because my dress does lace up in the back! I don't think it would take away a lot of detail from the back but it may take some in order to put the modesty shield and lacing in. I don't know how much it cost because mine was already a corset back. I would say go for it if it's not too much money!

Your dress is beautiful! I'm getting sleeves like yours added to mine :) I think the idea for your back would look great.

I think it will look great with a corset back. Mine originally didn't have a corset back but I was able to order it with the manufactorior changing it for me. I'm not sure what the cost would be with a seamstress but I know I spent like an extra 300 dollars I believe to have mine done. (It's been a few months since my dress was ordered and I can't remember the exact cost they charges me.)

With or without it your dress is beautiful!

I prefer the lace up back too.  My dress is a corset top, so the lace up back gives you a lot more flexibility in terms of fitting it properly to your body.

The alterations you want her to do are pretty standard, but to add the lace up back may cost a bit more.  Maybe see how much it is to add the lace back before you make your decision, I personally wouldn't spend too much on altering the dress (which was expensive enough as is!)

Your gown will look lovely with a lace up back.  Make sure you choose a seamstress that is experienced in Wedding Gowns and has converted dresses from zipper to corset style.  Most have done this conversion many times.  Here in Phoenix we charge $50-$75 but the cost will very depending on where you live and the shop you use.  Happy wedding

This past summer I had to have a bridesmaid dress altered from zipper to corset (found out I was prego about 2 months after ordering the dress, which fit me perfect at the time).  I was freaking out because I was going to be almost 6 months along!
The head seamstress told me not to stress out, that they could modify it to a corset back.  They did a wonderful job, it cost me with hemming and the corset alteration, about 160 dollars.
Good Luck!
