My mom hosted our engagement party Last Saturday. That was the most stressful week ever. I had a busy work week with fast approaching deadlines. I planned for a backyard BBQ style event, bought decorations specifically for the outdoors. For the past few weeks the weather had been so nice & sunny in the 70s. Even the weekend before was so nice out. The week of the party the weather got really cold and rainy. We dropped from 70s to mid 40s and some highs of 60. Needless to say, it was still too cold to have the party outdoors. So that was kind of disappointing. Then 2 days before the party we got a call about a sick relative out of town who was not doing so well and could pass any day. That was just heartbreaking because he is like a grandfather to me. My mom was really stressed out and didnt know if she would be able to host the party because she was contemplating traveling to see him. Cancelling the party wouldnt have been a big deal to me because family comes first and we could always reschedule the party or do away with it period. He did propose earlier this year at my birthday party which we could have also used as an engagement party. Anyway, my mom ended up talking to him that night and he gave her peace of mind and told her not to come. He was at peace and ready for his calling and wouldnt want her to have to travel to see him twice in a short period of time. With the go-ahead from him, w went on with the party.
A day or two before the party I went to my moms house and we began to set-up, which required a lot of re-arranging furniture to make room for food tables, and extra guest seating. Lukily my parents have a rec room with a second kitchen & full sized bar, so great for entertaining. I managed to use the decorations I bought for outdoors inside, so I didnt waste much money. We went shopping for food & got busy cooking (hot wings, tequila lime wings, honey bbq wings, garlic & herb meatballs, spaghetti, mac n cheese, devilled eggs, pasta salad, croissants, and vanilla & chocolate cupcakes with my custom tiffany blue frosting it took several attempts to make). The food turned out great. And guests began to arrive, some I havent seen in years. After everyone had a chance to eat & drink, we played the first game which was a quiz about my fiancé and I. There were 13 questions such as how did we meet, where was our first date, whats our favorite food, etc. The person who scored the highest won a gift basket I created with personal items in our wedding colors (Tiffany blue basket that contained footies, soaps, lotions, massager, note pads, etc.). While I corrected the quiz, I had the 2nd game going, which was how many words you can make out of our first names. My moms co-worker won that game, she came up with almost 50 words. They had so much fun with those two games. After the games talked about wedding stuff, danced, and I shared with my girls cards I created that officially asked them to be my MOH/BM and handed them a wedding newsletter I created with more info on the date, colors, attire, venue, and other details.
As the night went on and many guests left early, I decided we should play the 3rd and final game, which ended up being the highlight of the party. Since there were only three actual couples left and the rest were single, we played a version of the newly wed game. The girls came up with 3 questions for the guys and vice-versa. The questions were pretty basic such as favorite color to crazy like if you could have sex anywhere and not get caught where would it be? The game was so funny and so much fun. One of the questions we had to answer about the guys was whats their favorite sport. My fiancé isnt a big sports fan but I said football because he watches the Packers with me. His drunk behind had on his card swimming. Moral of this story is
dont play the newly (nearly) wed game drunk. But at the end of the game, we ended up winning with the most questions right. Since it was our party, I gave the last gift basket to the couple that came in 2nd place. It turned out great despite the craziness of the week.
