My Big Fat Gaming Reception...
part two!
So my sister agreed to allow me to have the reception at her house, provided nothing bad happens before then. So allow me to show you a few things I have planned.
I found a caterer at least! I'm going to have Wolfgang Puck catering for the party. It's pricey - about $5,500 to $6,000, but that's what I was looking for, and that's okay with me. The food will be worth it I think. I am going to visit them next year, and I want a chic spin on old, familiar favorites. I know I can't go too out there, but I don't want to be plain either. It's my day, I don't have to be bloody plain. And I've found ideas for gaming favors. I found them on the website snackordie.com . I HAVE to have some of these at the wedding, I just have to. Don't they look yummy? Also, I really want a mushroom cupcake cake. There will be a tier on top for hubby and I to have, but I want cupcakes that look like mushrooms from Super Mario Bros. We want the favors to be cookies that are gaming related. My big two are either invincible star cookies or pacman/mrs. pacman/pacman baby cookie set (since I'm pregnant with baby number one!). Also, I'm wanting to have an hors d'oeurves reception - familiar foods in a chic sort of presentation. I like what I have so far, so we'll see what happens. I may have to change my date, which is fine. I could think of a more intimate way of spending new years anyway. I might just add another year to make sure that I get EXACTLY what I want. |

I changed my wedding date
...and my wedding ensemble
So, I've decided we're going to do the wedding on New Year's Eve/Day in 2011. I'm going to talk to my sister about it tomorrow. I don't see why it'd be an issue, but I've learned to never assume anything. It gives me more creative control over my wedding vision, and I get to do more on a modest budget. Plus, my sister's house is party central, and I know despite it's modesty, I can throw a swinging party there.
Plus, I've always wanted a New Years wedding! And I've changed my dress. The other one just seems to expensive, even custom made. This dress is by Eden Bridals and it's just as pretty, and cheaper. I still want to look my best for this day, even if we have the party at my sister's house. I'm still looking for a place to hold the ceremony. I found a beautiful chapel, but it's all the way in Orland Park. I'm sure I can still swing it, but there will be grumbling. Anyway, check out the pictures. I'll be doing a gamer wedding post tomorrow. |

Color Change and Inspiration Board!
I changed my colors to ivory, silver, and black (with gold accents). I also created another Inspiration Board. This is a general idea of my vision for our vow renewal. It sucks that I can't do anything about it right now, but it's turning out quite nicely so far!

Reception Sites
In perusing the net, I found a nifty place in Hinsdale called the Katherine Legge Memorial Lodge. For a fairly inexpensive amount, we can rent the entire house for four hours or more, and we can also rent equipment to be used, like TVs and such, so we can have the gaming aspect of it as well! Plus, there are places to linger in case people don't want to be dancing all day. I think I would rent it for eight hours, just to make sure that everything is set up and all dandy and there's no pressure or anything.
I hope I can visit the place when I go back to Chicago next year. It's rustic and vintage enough to pull off my vintage Christmas theme. I'm looking at other places, like the Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oakbrook. I'm looking at the event hall for the ceremony (since it looks very church-like, I love that) and the actual estate for the reception. Of course I would want more than four hours, I think, to be on the safe side to set up everything. I would love to have a reception for more than four hours, but I don't think it's going to happen. I'm afraid of the time just flying by. I don't know if I could set it up so that I could have "game rooms" but we'll see. The Legge Memorial has potential, though. Can't make any decisions until I see both places. And when I do, you'll know what I've decided. |

My Big Fat Gaming Reception
So I've decided that while the wedding will be in a church and rather formal, I've been wondering about the idea of having a rocking gaming reception at my sister's house. I've seen bigger houses, yes, but that's never stopped my sister from throwing a swinging party, and it shouldn't stop me.
So I thought, what would happen if I threw a fun party at her house? It would be an awesome gaming reception on all three levels of her house. The main level would be for mingling at first, but the bulk of the party would happen downstairs in the basement, where the bar is. The first level, the living room, is where the karaoke/rock band stuff could happen. There might even be a tourney with prizes for the best singers/rockers! Comb your mullet and bring out your inner diva! Then, on the top floor of her house, another gaming tourney, for fighting games and such (I'm a huge Street Fighter player). By the time my reception rolls around, there will be a lot of teenagers, so I'm sure this will help them pass the time. Plus prizes are involved. I hope they don't kill each other trying to get the prizes! Or maybe the Wii could be up there! Mario Party, Wii Play, and Wii Sports are darn addictive! The basement would be where the main party is at. My sister has a bar down there, so of course, we'd supply the pops, icea tea, and the every important booze. If I were inclined to be DIY, I'd make a little "Husband and Wife Walkthrough: All you needed to know about the lovely couple!" for everyone there. I might even quiz people for a prize! Did I mention I want Super Mario Star Cookies for favors? I can't think of any other ideas, but if I did go the home wedding route, this would be an awesome idea. I could afford it, and it would just be epic. Everyone in my family loves video games to a degree. Hell, I have my mom to thank for getting me into them. I'm sure people will enjoy it. For a New Years Eve party, my sister had DDR and Karaoke Revolution. It brought down the damn house. So, ladies, what do you think? |

Wedding Dress
It may be a while, but I've got it already!
I'm having my dress made from this design by Reem Acra. There is no way I can afford a $10,000 on a $15,000 budget! Puh-leez! Anyway, it's based of the dress "Blossom", and I think it's the perfect dress for a winter wedding. The embroidery is just beautiful. The veil is show stopping. It definitely sets the tone for a formal wedding, which I would like to have (I'm not saying I want black tie and coat tails, but if I seem sneakers or jeans...well, someone has got to go!). It'll cost me about $1000 for both. I trust the person who is going to make it, she's never let me down.
My family won't know what hit them. I'd like my hair in a vintage style, and the necklace is just gorgeous. If everything falls into place, my ensemble can't be beat! These pictures of the dress are courtesy of "Your Dream Dress" on ebay. |

And now for something completely different...
...because I got tired of the same ol' stuff.
If you've been to one wedding in my family, you've been to them all. Whether at the family church, at the groom's family's church, at the park, inside, outside, etc., though things may deviate a little (like my aunt's procession which look damn near an HOUR to complete, and yet she complained about the other wedding processions being too slow), it's all the same. It's not the ceremony I've had issues with though - it's the RECEPTION! It's all the same. All the same. The friend DJ who plays the same songs (people may disagree, but you can only take so much of the old folks playing the Electric Slide) but hardly anyone dances, the family style dinner with the old standbys of chicken, mostaccioli, and mashed potatoes. The champagne no one drinks. The gaudy cake with strawberry and banana filling (and I always get the banana part!). It's all the same. Well, my older sister had a potluck at her house, but guess what we all ate? Chicken, mostaccioli, and...you get the idea.
NO MORE, I say, NO MORE! I refuse for my wedding to just be another in a long line of forgettable affairs. You spend all that money to have a day to remember, but you don't put any pizazz into it? Ugh. I guess I've always marched to the beat of a different drummer, but I've had it with the status quo. All this money I'll be saving, I better do something different. I'm thinking glitz, glam, and an evening wedding. Not an afternoon one, evening one. YOU KIDS WILL BE OUT LATE! You might not even make it to church (gasp!). I will have booze, because I like it, and by that time, my bun in the over will be four, and I can down a few margaritas! I want everyone to dance, dang it! And for goodness sake, you will eat something other than CHICKEN!! Well, the usually kinds of chicken anyway (breast of chicken, roasted chicken, and God forbid, fried chicken...) I will not be like everyone else! Haven't been that way before, will not be that way now! Are any other brides trying to be different for their special day? |

Happily Married...
My husband and I married in July 2007 in Alaska. It was a small ceremony at the resort I worked at that summer, and most of the guests, while some were his family members, were my co-workers. Even though my dress was very small, I left the ring in my room, and it was planned haphazardly in a month, it's a very special day for us. It took us eleven years to marry, due to immigration issues, and we were very young back then. It was a very special day for both of us.
I was very sad that my family couldn't attend, even though they sent us well wishes. After hemming and hawing, I've decided that my husband and I would love to have a renewal in Chicago, my hometown. My husband loves Chicago, with Arlington Heights holding a special place in our hearts (we had our first mini-vacation there!). Most of my family lives there, as well as my friends, so it makes sense we'd want to have a lovely ceremony there. But Chicago is NOT cheap. And while I loved my first wedding, I want this renewal to be done right and done beautifully. I'm still in the middle of immigration here in Canada, so it'll be a while before I start working again. With three years to plan this day the right way (well, almost four, but you get the idea), I think I can manage. I think I can plan a wonderful day with $15,000. If I can save more than that, it's even better. The point is, it's pretty good to live in a small town with a limited amount of entertainment options (except for a Casino and I'm NOT going there, no matter how good I am at blackjack!), it will make saving more diligent, while helping my husband, who pays mostly all the bills. Since it's my day, I'm going to pay for most, if not all of it. I can has complete control. Hubby says he'll help when he can, but I have no problem doing it this way. I want this, I'll go about and get it (he wants it too, but he has other things to worry about, and I'm okay with that! that's why I can do this this way). Still, it's a day to celebrate us, so I'm sure I'll be asking him what he wants, much to his chagrin *lol*. Well, here's to a long journey! |

Yes, I know I'm early...
...but when you're planning a big renewal bash, you leave NOTHING to chance. Next year, we're going to hit the ground running, planning everything. So stick around and enjoy the ride *S*.
