I found an article on snopes.com, which is much like "Myth Busters," about throwing rice at weddings: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/birdrice.asp It turns out that rice is actually a natural part of a bird's diet, so throwing rice at a wedding is completely safe for the birds. However, it's not safe for people because when the rice lands on a paved path, someone can step on it and slip because it rolls around. There exists a kind of confetti, though, that kind of looks like rice but is heart shaped (aw). It's biodegradable, still safe for birds, but most importantly, it's flat, so if people step on it, it won't roll around and make them slip. Neat! One last note, however, your venue may not allow confetti of any kind because, unless the birds eat it all up right away, it leaves a big old mess. This still if biodegradable, though, so if the venue doesn't mind, it'll dissolve into the ground eventually, or even wash away after the next rainfall. Here's the cheapest place I found where you can buy it: www.favorstudio.com
