Ask a Question
Are you living together yet???

Artistic Dividers
When I was younger I said I wanted to be totally traditonal and
wait until I was married until I lived with a man......But now
that Im older Ive been told that its better to live together first
because you'll learn more about your potential partner and wether
or not your going to kill each other before the big I DO, Charles
is the first man Ive lived together with and Im glad we live together
because there are no funky surprises! and we really get along
so Im happy to move forward as husband and wife what about
you? Are you living together yet?

I am a strong believer in living together first. Besides the fact that it's very common here in Australia to live together before marriage or even being engaged, I really feel that I personally would not be comfortable making a commitment like marriage to somebody that I don't know fully. And how can you really know someone fully without living with them 24hrs a day? Props to those who take the leap without living together first, and making it work!

I don't really think one way is better than the other. I guess it just depends on each individual person. I've heard that cohabitation before marriage can lead to a greater chance of divorce, but oh well. I lived with my FH before we were legally married and I think I would have gone crazy if we didn't live together. And I'm sure things will be just as nice when we live together after we are married. I am not sure what causes the cohabitation/divorce correlation, but if you want it to work and you love each other, I don't see what the difference is.

Yes, we most definitely moved in together first.  We took it a step further and said regardless of what we find out after "moving in" together - we are committed.  SO WE BOUGHT OUR DREAM HOUSE!

I think it's important to live together first. Some people just can't live together, and it's better to figure that out before you are married. My FI and I have  lived together for 4 years, and I wouldn't change it. You get to know your FI on a different level, and won't be surprised when you move in together after the wedding.

yep we just lived together for the past 2 years and we just bought a house together about 5 months ago. I see no problem with it before marriage. now adays it is becoming a must so you can get to know each other before taking the big leap.

My fiance actually proposed the day he moved in. I definitely agree that living together first is best. Its best to know all the weird things that people do in their own homes before getting married.

Yes we are living together now. I wanted to see what it would be like to live with him before marriage, so it would not be a suprise after I say "I DO"

Ya we live together and have done from the get go really, I have been living on my own with my daughter for the past 6 years. So when my daughter was 5 months I moved out of my parents. I split up with her dad when she was 2 (she is now 6) and been going out with my FH for 2 years. So when I had my own place he was always there basically. Then I had our daughter she is 1 now and I am still renting but the plan is to get our own place after we get married so it will be "ours" rather than him living at mine?

We've lived together completely "on our own" for the past 3 years now...well it was 3 years back in May.  That's when we moved back down to Alabama where my fiance is from, but before that I was living in Virginia with my parents, which is where I'm from.  At the time, my fiance and I had a long distance relationship (for about the first 2 years we were dating) but he would come up to visit me very often and whenever he did, he would stay with me and my parents at their house, so even when we officially moved out "on our own," it still didn't seem weird to us because we had already "lived" together so to speak each time he came to visit (which one of those times was for 3 months straight!!).

i think its okay. me and my FH live together, and basically have since the beginning. we just never wanted to be apart, and we decided that since we stayed with eachother at one of our homes everynight anyway it was dumb to pay two rents. just be prepared to deal with comments from people. especially older members of your family. but i wouldnt trade it for anything

We never think of getting engaged or married when we started living together, but our living together experience was so....goood...that after first 6 months we decided we want to get married.

We live together. We have been living together almost
since we met. I had an apt, but we were always at his
house. I never stayed at my house. We always joked
about how I have a very expensive storage unit. He had
roommates at the time, and they had just signed a year
lease so after the year was up we moved into our own
place and the rest is history :)

ended up staying over too much because i didnt want to spend an hour per day driving to school!  and also we help each other with money and such.  at that time his parents were paying but now were just about self sufficient, even though i have to work (only just starting like 2 weeks ago! finally!) 2 part time jobs that equal 6.5 shifts, lucky one of them has shifts about 7-7.5 hrs and its with some close friends!  east honolulu is an EXPENSIVE place to live, but we just YESTERDAY moved into our first official apartment together!  its 1225/mo for a 31st flr studio in waikiki thats in awesome condition and def. big enough for the two of us!  whew talking a lot.  anyway point: didnt plan to but we are living together!

We've been living together for nearly 18 months now. We pretty much moved in together as soon as we became a couple- we just knew it was right. He's not the first guy I've lived with, but I have to admit that I would never even consider marrying someone I hadn't spent at least some time living with beforehand- I'm not a fan of nasty surprises and annoying habits.

Been living together since I was 18 and he was 20... so almost 5 years... wow. I didn't realize it was that long!

I would not marry anyone I haven't lived with... you need to see what people are really like,

Oh God yes we do. I could not imagine just moving in together after you are married. To me that's wierd. To each his own. Might work for some people but not for me. besides I love waking up to his kisses every morning. I would miss him if we had different places. We bought a house together last Dec. before that we were ofically living together since April (1 year before engagment). and when we lived aappart we just took turns at different houses for sleep-overs. We bever had a night appart. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I totally agree with what you did!  I don't live with my FI yet but we're planning on moving in with each other after I graduate w/my BA in June.  Our wedding isn't until March '10 so we'll have plenty of time to get accustomed to living w/one another and like you said...there will be "no funky surprises" once the wedding rolls around!  haha I also think its a great idea because you fully understand what you're going to be putting up with before you make your vows/commitments to each other.

I've never met a couple who waited until after marriage to cohabite who ever divorced. Every couple I know that has ever divorced lived together before marriage.

However, I admit, we lived together before because we were going to be roommates. We grew up together. We were friends first. Then we just started living like we were married to eachother. So, we eloped.
