Wedding Cake
DIY?

Some one had commented earlier that you could do fake cardboard tiers and then just have the top tier be real so that you and your hubby can cut it at the reception. This still has a nice presentation and its less expensive.

Assuming i provide alternate desserts for my guest [hence the cupcakes in the post below] I don't see why this isn't a brilliant idea.

SO... I'm thinking that i might DIY my wedding cake. if you asked me about this 3 months ago i would've said 'H no' BUT now that I'm actually engaged and paying/planning for this event is a reality I don't see why i shouldn't.

I found these edible peacock feathers on Etsy.com [great for anything wedding related that you may need handmade: invites, hair accessories for bridesmaids, etc.] I think they make the cake look elegant and professional [despite the fact that it won't be]

I still have a year to perfect my fondant technique [my first attempt will be this weekend as i construct a cake for my engagement party] Pictures will follow, but let me know what you all think!

fondant is fiddly... if you are serious about making your own cake, you might want to take some decorating classes - if you have a Michaels or Jo-Ann nearby, sign up for the Wilton classes. They have a whole course dedicated solely to fondant!

I am getting my FH sister to make our cake as she isnt a professional cake maker but makes good cakes generally. But the more I talk to her I think she is really worried about it and may out source it.

Anyway all Im trying to say is nothing wrong with diy but maybe there is someone that can help you as you may end up being to busy and just one more thing you have to do.

Would love to see photos but I think the image there looks great

penguinsinlove: yes i have a joanns near by that i'm looking into. if fondant doesnt work out then i may just play around with buttercream and see what i like. i love baking, and practicing for my own wedding cake is certainly a good excuse to bake/practice!

missnatasha: my mom can definitely help me, she is an excellent baker. I am afraid of being busy, but i also know i have a lot of stay-at-home mom's at my finger tips :)

thank you both for your input!

I am having a fake cake with real top and the cake looks soooo real! I think that if you DIY it would be pretty easy but make sure it isn't a lot of stress on you. I think if you do it all buttercream icing you can keep it up to 2 week before hand, fondant icing not too sure about.

I can't wait to see you attempts/final product!
