Ask a Question
crinolines, slips, petticoats- oh my!?
so.. I've never been much good with figuring out what kind of underwear is needed under what. my usual for evening dresses of any kind is a longline bra, girdle & a close fitting slip.

However, FH is a sucker for a-line gowns. When I took him dress shopping with me, the only dresses he liked were the gowns with crinolines under them. I've decided to get this dress (but with a platinum sash) and I'm thinking I'd like a crinoline under it so that I can dye it green & wear it for the ceremony to fill it out a bit. All the ones I tried on at Davids were just too poofy and I could barely walk in them.

So how do I figure out what kind of slip/petticoat/crinoline I need?

Crinolines are fabulous - and if you live the lifestyle I do, they become a staple under almost all dresses!!

You have to figure out how much of  a crinoline your dress will allow for... you don't want something too puffy otherwise the dress will start lifting (like a shirt that's too tight and you're constantly pulling it down haha)...

You can look around online for crinolines and you'll find tons of places - just make sure you get a good quality one - if you go cheap, chances are that petticoat is going to be hurting your legs and butt all day and night!! Try for softer fabric ones, not the hard plasticy-feeling ones!

When it comes to the length, make sure you don't get it shorter than the length of your dress. Same length or an inch or two longer...

Hope this helps a bit!!!

If you're going to a bridal salon they're usually really helpful with suggestions for underlayers!  I tried on a dress that I had seen a picture of and loved.  After trying the dress on, I wasn't really impressed until the consultant told me to put a hoop underneath!  WOW!  Huge difference - it absolutely made the dress perfect!  So when you're trying on your gowns, ask what kind of crinoline would work with the dress.

As much as I love crinolines though, it is a lot of extra weight and adds more fabric around your legs.  It was a freakin hot day an trying on large poufy dresses was a sweaty business!  The hoops added airspace under the dress instead so there was blessed ventilation!  Just a thought ;-)
