Makeup
holy crap- that's the last time I let Mary Kay do my makeup!
Last week I got a call from a Mary Kay saying that I'd won a $20 gift certificate and a free makeover from them. So, i went along with it- after all, what's the harm in it and I get free stuff right? The appointment was originally set for yesterday but for a few reasons it got rescheduled for this afternoon. Emily, (one of my bridesmaids) and I drove around for 25 minutes in the pouring rain trying to find the place.

Finally, we get there- it was probably the most obscure little place I think I've ever seen. We get in there and start talking to the girl- we were working on color because I'm really allergic to their skin care products. I know what I like and what I don't. Emily's pretty hopeless with makeup. she tends to wear the same three colors and black liner. She'll admit to not knowing or understanding the first thing about makeup.

Anyway, we talked to the MK consultant and we made the mistake of letting her pick out our colors. Emily ended up with light shimmery pink, slate blue & and a slightly brighter blue eyeshadows, navy liner, and barbie doll pink lipstick. I ended up with a shimmery sand shade, dark tarnished gold color, a very drab olive green shadow and an olive green liner. Doesn't sound too terrible right? It wasn't *really* bad- it's pretty similar to a style I wear occasionally anyway, but mine is much much nicer and more vivid (and uses a much better brand) but... to finish it off she topped it off with a dark purple lip color. It was so hideous I couldn't even take a photo of it. Hasn't the girl heard of the whole strong eyes, soft lips & vice versa rule? We humored her and told her it was "um... different?" haha. The MK rep tried *so* hard to get us to buy the products. Emily gave in and bought some of the mineral foundation & blush. I had the $20 gift card, so I bought some cream-to-powder eyeshadow in "vanilla" (i love cream to powder shadows for their staying power) and a dark red colored lipstick. At least I know I'll use both of them

Thank god Emily only lives about 5 minutes from the office. We went back to hers and scrubbed it all off as quick as we could. Emily's several shades darker than I am (she's very dark tanned, I'm pretty ivory) but I stole her foundation & powder and blended it in on me as best I could- thank god i was wearing long sleeves & a scarf today! lol. I then stole the rest of her makeup- all of which are awful colors on me, but hell, we were only going to the bar for a late afternoon drink. It's not like anyone was there, and it's not as though I was trying to impress anyone. Chris burst out laughing when I came home with a face 4 shades darker than the rest of my skin tone. He laughed even harder when I described to him what the MK rep did to us.

So yeah.... I think I'll pass on having them do my makeup for the wedding! haha. Although, the foundation wasn't terrible. Would've been nice to have been given enough to actually cover my entire face rather than just the worst spots. Same with the powder & blush. This just reaffirms my belief that I should probably do my own makeup for the engagement photos and the wedding- Only once have I ever had a makeup artist ever do anything I really liked and now she lives in Ohio! gah.

i'm not a fan of Mary Kay. I have never had luck with their make up & think it's all crap. Plus 90% of the reps I personally know don't even wear make up. They just sell it. My advice is find someone (even at a department store) who is actually a make up artist. You will not regret it! Best of Luck!!! Happy Planning!! I'm absolutely certain that you'll look amazing no matter what!! :-)

I too have never had any luck with mk....and i guess their reps are all the same because one of my moms friends did a makeover for my sisters birthday and all of her friends looked terrible!!! It was sooooooooooo bad and not one of them were happy. I love clinique....but thats just me! You should go to a dept store and try several of the make up centers there. Thats what i did to figure out which one i liked the best. Sorry your experience was bad....but i sure wish you had a picture lol.

I use to hate it, but then my sister gave selling it a shot....so I had to help out my sister; right?!?  Anyway, I have found so many items that I love!!!!  As I got older, my face isn't as sensitive to it as it use to be to their products, years ago.  But, FYI...everybody wins when you put your name in their drawings, they call every single person and tell them that, that way it gives them more potential clients!  Sister stopped selling...which ended up bad for me, because I use to get great prices from her and I would babysit in exchange for MK products.  lol

But, I still buy stuff on Ebay (brand new; NEVER used).  MK's 3 in 1 face wash is the bomb, as is their moisturizer and tubed foundation.  I use many of the eyeshadows and blusher and bronzers.   I also like many of their fragrances.

I still use my trusty old Clinique powder compact, lip gloss, and mascara though. Lipstick is difficult for me because I am so picky.  When I see a color a like, no matter who makes it, I buy it.

But, I have made a appt. with a great gal at the Clinique counter for my wedding day to do my makeup for free, and in exchange I will tip her and purchase my mascara and compact...so we all make out!

just because they sell mary kay doesn't mean they are professional make up artists. I used to sell mary kay. it's like avon. you sign up, you're a consultant. lol. you don't get paid to sell mary kay. it's not worth going to cosmetology school to learn how to apply make up. mary kay is actually good quality cosmetics. the powders are milled more finely than say your drug store brands.. so they last longer and blend more easily. now picking colors... that is an art. not everyone is artistic. I pick my own colors, and tell THEM what I want to buy.

SOOOOO sapphire... I'd still give a professional a chance to do your make up. It's like saying the girl next door did your hair and it sucked.... so now you won't give a good salon a chance..... see what I'm saying?

So if you didn't really buy anything from that girl, basically you wasted your time and hers. And she worked for free.

This is what you do if you want awesome make up. Find a reputable salon. Have a trial make up session done so you can pick colors ahead of time. Be very verbal if you do or don't like stuff. Document the colors they used on you. And on your wedding day, have it done again.

*wink*

oh I've had more makeovers than I can count. My mother used to drag me along for them all the time when I was a teenager because she hated the way I did my makeup and wanted me to learn how to do it "nicely" and "properly" (i was all about some heavy black eyeliner & charcoal colored shadow- and i did do it right! every artist always commented on how i took my time with it and made it look like a proper smoky eye, not just slap it on) and while they could usually do my eyes pretty nicely, i'm usually unimpressed with foundation coverage, as well as the blush & lip colors.

Everyone's all about "natural" or "pretty" makeup and that's really not my style. I like something more edgy & dramatic without being too over the top... which doesn't seem to sit well with most MA's. They seem to want total creative license to do whatever they want and they don't like being told that its not what you want. I usually tend to get more compliments on my makeup when i do it myself than when I've had it professionally done and do me, that's really saying something. That's what's driving me to go to cosmetology school eventually (when we have the money spare).

I used to sell Avon, so I know that there's little to no profit for things like this. And even after explaining to her why I don't sell avon anymore and why I'd never sell mary kay, she still insisted upon giving me the speech about why it's a good time to sign up with MK. *rolls eyes* i know its part of what she has to do, but no thanks. I also know that most MK consultants aren't makeup artists, and most of them don't have an ounce of creativity in their little finger (just like most Avon reps). But, having had friends who've sold it, I know that they do offer classes and tutorials around here so that you can become qualified to do makeovers somewhat properly. It was just disappointing- especially the color selection.

I looked at that picture of you and I was rather impressed with your make up.
