DIY Wedding
Garter (with Instructions)

A long time ago FH and I decided not to do a bouquet and garter toss, but I thought it would be a nice surprise for him anyways. I spent a while looking around for a garter that "spoke to me" and in the end I decided to just make one. I've mentioned before that robots are an inside joke with FH and I so I wanted to include a little robot buddy.

It was really quite easy and I've included the directions below in case anyone wants to tackle this diy too. The entire cost for this diy was $6. Yes, $6! and took me about an hour to complete.

Step 1 - measure your thigh to determine how much material you need. My thigh is 22" so I got 27" of lace, elastic and ribbon. The lace and black frilly elastic are both quite stretchy, which is good. I got the little robot charm off etsy.

Step 2 - Centre the elastic onto the lace and sew in place. As you are sewing pull the elastic tight (but not the lace), so that when you finish the elastic relaxes and the lace gets bunched.

Step 3 - Centre your decorative ribbon on the elastic and sew down. I chose to sew in the middle of the ribbon, but if you chose to sew down each edge it will make for a cleaner look.

Step 4 - With the right sides together stitch the ends of the garter together to create a complete circle.

Step 5 - Here's the fun part! You can add a bow or 2 or 3, I chose to create this little ribbon flower.

Step 6 - Attach charm (if you have one) with enough stitches to securely fasten it.

Step 7 - Admire handiwork!

SO very cute! When I made my garters I fed the elastic through but I didn't think of trying to sew it directly on! Brilliant! I also bought elastic thread to experiment with but I haven't quite been brave enough for that one yet. haha

Wow! You did an amazing job. I had started thinking about DIYing my garter, but was worried it'd be too hard or time consuming. I think I'll start looking for the supplies needed. Thanks for the DIY tutorial.
