different hair styles, add something to the dress, different style bouquet...

it's a pretty recent thing to have the MOH in a different dress. I'd never even seen it done until I started researching for my wedding. Traditionally, I've always known the MOH to be the one standing closest to the bride, and she usually has a slightly larger bouquet than the other BM's but not as large as the brides.

Yes, it is ok for the maid of honor to look like the other bridesmaids. It's a matter of preference for the bride.

But if you want your bridesmaid to be somewhat different you can:

-get her to wear the same dress but in a different color, it it's not too late or wear the same colour dress, but in a different style.

or

-Perhaps she can wear a shawl to make her dress more elegant, if you can't make any changes to the dress or its colour.

I've been in wedding parties where the bride kept everything consistant (dress and flowers) and others where the bride got the MOH to wear a diffeferent style dress and colour. Again, your choice.

All of my bridesmaids and my maid of honour are wearing the same dress and will have the same bouquets.  But I asked them to pick out their own shoes and hair style, their personalities will come through that way.  For their gifts I got my bridesmaids the same jewellery and my maid of honour something slightly different.

If you want your maid of honor to stand out, you could have her put a sash on her dress.  Like a small sash or bow of another color in your wedding color scheme.

Though the weddings I have been in the MOH has worn the same dress as the bridesmaids.

My MOH bought the same dress as my bridesmaids but since they were floor length I decided that she could get hers cut to cocktail length.  She was all for that idea, so that is how she will be different, but everyone is in the same colour.
