The Proposal
It was Friday, two days before our one year anniversary. We had discussed going out to eat at a beautiful restaurant here in Burlington, called Martini's. This restaurant is near the river, located on the 4th floor of the building, and has a beautiful panoramic view of the river and our Mississippi River Bridge. Our anniversary was on that Sunday. Since the restaurant is not open on Sundays, I suggested that we go Saturday evening. In the mean time, I had also been searching for something new to wear, but was having a difficult time as our mall doesn’t have a whole lot to offer.
I suspected that Jeremy would be proposing soon. We had talked about marriage and had briefly looked at rings. I suspected that if he was going to do it, it would be on our anniversary or near it. In fact I had been telling my best friend that exact thought. On Friday I called her to ask her if she would be in town that weekend. I was hoping that if he did pop the question that she would be in town to celebrate with us. She informed me that she would be busy that weekend, so I was already greatly disappointed!
That Friday, I went to work as usual. Around 4 PM I received flowers with a little card attached. The card read “Change of plans. Dinner tonight at 7pm, I will pick you up.” He followed that up with a text message that stated that his sister was in the hospital about to deliver her baby. He wanted to go to dinner tonight, incase they would induce her the next day.
I went home after work to get ready. When I walked in the door, there was a note on the counter that said he had a gift lying on the bed. He had bought me a couple of beautiful shirts at one of my favorite stores. They were elegantly wrapped in my favorite color paper, pink.
He picked me up, as promised and we headed for dinner. He ordered a bottle of wine and we had a nice meal. After desert the waitress asked if we would like to go on a tour of the Food Guru’s (the chef) gallery. I have to laugh now, because when she asked me that I almost said no. I really didn’t care to see it. However, we followed her through the restaurant down a hallway to a door where she stopped, and informed us that the kitchen had paged her. She told us to go on in, and she’d meet back with us in just a moment.
Jeremy opened the door. The small dark room seemed to be a wine tasting room with about 5 high top tables and the same amazing panoramic view of the bridge. It was lit by several candles on each table. There were pink and white flower petals and long stem roses on each of the tables, as well as lining the windows. I noticed one red rose in a vase on the window ledge. Believe it or not, I didn’t even realize what was happening. Even though I had been expecting it all along, after dinner was over I just assumed he wouldn’t be doing it at the restaurant. Maybe not even that night at all. He took me by the hand and walked me over to the window and started telling me how happy he was to have me in his life. (Now I was starting to catch on!) I looked around and noticed he even had a video camera set up in the corner.
He got down on one knee and handed me the red rose and asked me to marry him. I looked down and there was my ring, in the flower!
He did such a wonderful job decorating the room. It was the most romantic thing I have ever seen!
After he proposed and we finished gathering the flowers, we decided to go out and celebrate a little. Little did I know, he had already called several of my friends, and they were already waiting for us (including the one that was “busy”)! It was a great night. I couldn’t have asked for anything more. I can’t tell you how excited and luck I am to have such a wonderful man in my life!
