I didn't know that wedding cakes cost anywhere from $500-$1,000!! I'm a DIY/budget bride. $1,000 is a bit too much for me. Are there any alternatives? I was thinking of making a display cake and serve my guest great cake (that would be served by the servers) from a regular bakery. Is this too tacky? I really don't like the cupcake stand idea though. I'm also thinking about paying for a display cake with just the bottom tier being real. However, that also runs about $250-$300.00. Any idea's ladies?

an alternative is to do your cake out of styrofoam and then they have real sheet cakes in the back that they serve guests.. i am also on a tight budget but wanted a pretty cake. my wedding cake and grooms cake combined are only going to be 250-300 dollars. you might look into it if you don't mind the fake cake. (they can put a real layer on their for you and your hubby to cut for pictures and rub in eachother's faces)

wow... didn't see your last sentence sorry. but if they take the cake to the back to cut it the guests will never know...

Thank you! I called and inquired about styrofoam cakes and that is still about 275.....why? I wonder can I order it online and just make the display cake myself.

we are actually going to do the same we are having a fake cake which will be a DIY with just one real layer to cut into for the pics and then we are serving our guests indiviual small cakes in clear boxes which my friend will be making, number 1 weddings cakes like you said are way too expensive and number 2 i have been to many weddings and its ashame how many ppl leave the cake behind and dont eat it , at least this way they can take it home or eat it there if they choose

@ fairytalebride wonderful idea!! Every wedding that I've ever been to, I've never stayed around for the cake.

I can recommend to you my cake vendor: sweetest things...she did a fabulous job with our cupcakes and they were so sooooo delicious!
she is not a professional as in she is doing this part time, but 150 cupcakes + cake at the top with hand made roses + delivery was 470 dollars. That's very very reasonable!!
