Ask a Question
Who's daring enough to make their own wedding cake?

We've got awhile to do all things wedding oriented and are now considering getting into fondant work. It seems simple enough in theory. And with enough practice...
We're thinking of getting a styrofoam base cake and going from there...but I want to hear the stories good bad or otherwise.

Have you made your cake?
Others cakes?
Plan on making your cake?

my first try with fondant was making my daughter's birthday cake, and it actually wasn't too bad! the good thing is, you can buy a small tub of fondant and practice a whole lot with just that little bit. if it starts feeling dry, you just add a little shortening to it i think. if you're going with styrofoam layers, those can be made days in advance, and then the layer you're going to cut into can be made the day ahead of time. i think it'd be worth at least practicing, to see how you feel about working with it. but i would have someone else do the cake that everyone else is going to eat :)

We're gonna skip feeding folks cake and instead have cupcakes, brownies, blondies and a variety of cookies we'll be making and some candy I think.
I've found a woman online that makes "fake cakes" and from what I can tell her work is fantastic. You can see it at www.ultimatefakecakes.com
She'd do all the hard work and then ship it to me.
This is probably the route we'll end up going as I've heard nothing back from the local baker I contacted about using a dummy... But in the meantime I think I'm going to go get a tub of fondant down at Wally World and order a base of of ebay (I found an awesome seller) and try my hand at it. Worst case scenario I make a mess and throw the whole thing out the window... And best, I save us $200 dollars!

I'm going to attempt it. I've been watching A LOT of cake shows. Soon I'm going to start trial and error. I'm making a single cake with fondant. Then I'm making a bunch of cupcakes with pretty icing. I'm going to have the cake on top, and cupcakes around it. (On a base)
