GOLD CARATS... this is the proportion of gold to other metals in the piece: 24d gold is the purest form of gold; 18ct is 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals. "The higher the carat, the softer the metal," says Peter Taylor of The Goldsmiths' Company, "While some 24ct alloys can be made harder, they're not usually used for wedding bands; 22ct is more popular."
DIAMOND CARATS... this describe the weight of the stone (one carat=approx 0.2g) although heavier diamonds are not necessarily the most valuable, it's all in the cut says a De Beers spokesperson."Two stones can have the same 4Cs on paper (carat, clarity, color and cut) but if the diamond isn't cut properly, it can leak light. It's the cut that maximizes the light which means a big diamond won't necessarily have the most sparkle." And don't confuse 'cut' with the 'shape' of the diamond. The cut is to do with the angles of each side (facet). The shape is the overall appearance of the stone and can include round, marquise (elongated circle), oval, princess (square) and emerald (elongated square). "Your household policy might cover jewellery if you have portable possessions cover," says Chris Pitt of Ecclesiastical Insurance, "but check the terms of the policy to see if you have to itemize pieces over a certain amount. Keep photos of it for reference, too." And remember to clean it says Brighton-based designer Alex Goodman. "If you can't get it to a jewelerÂ’s, clean it with a toothbrush, hot water and Fairy Liquid to stop dirt collecting under the stone."
