When did everyone start meeting with bakeries? About how many months before?

My wedding is Oct 1, 2011 and I just started looking yesterday ( so about 5 months )... I am not having a cake, we are doing customized cupcakes - but I think its never too early to look :)

The sooner the better when wedding planning! I met with a baker last July(my wedding is this July) but they were already booked for my date! Popular wedding months (spring and summer) book really fast. You'd be surprised. I found this when I talked to a few of my vendors, they said brides are booking further in advance because they want the time to save the money, and have time to pay off the vendors. The 2nd baker I went to luckily had my date open =) Found her on weddingwire.com

We started seeing them about 7 months before, but I think that was because I love cake, so the cake was super important to me - lol. So I'm not sure everyone sees them as early as we did.

i am getting married next may and i have already met with some and next weekend we are going ahead with booking the one we have chosen. the sooner the better.

I'm getting married in July and we met with our baker in August.  We mainly did this because it was just a local at home bakery and she books up pretty fast because of her great rates!  So, that's why we booked close to a year in advance.

Thanks guys I think I am going to start looking now. Its so hard since I am moving 1500 miles away I am trying to get stuff done before I go. I just don't want to be too early.
