Rhinestone Cake Banding and Rhinestone Cake Stand

I've seen tons of posts and pictures of wedding cakes that have rhinestone banding around the cake and rhinestone monogrammed cake topper (as shown in the inspiration picture - can't remember which post I got the photo from). After I showed the bride the photos, she absolutely loved it and told me to go for it. I purchased the monogrammed cake topper from ebay and purchased some Swarovski rhinestones to cover the initials. I've completed one of the initials and have two more to do (will posts pictures of the completed project soon). I did a search on the rhinestone banding and they were quite expensive. I wanted the 6-rows stones and i also wanted to create a cake stand that was completely covered in rhinestones like the attached inspiration photo. Luckily I knew some folks in the garment industry and they sold me a 25-yard bolt of 24-rows rhinestone banding at wholesale price. I figured I can use what I need and sell the leftovers to anyone that is interested or use it for other projects.

I'm going to ask my husband to buid me a mirror cake stand so that I can attach the rhinstone banding to. It would be easier/cheaper to build a wooden stand but it will absorb moisture and may get mildew buildup if I have to clean the cake stand after each use.

To save additional money, the bride's sister will decorate a "cake dummie" (styrofoam cake) and we will make sheet cakes that will be served by the wait staff. In the last two years, this is what many of my brides are doing. So if many of your WBC brides like to DIY, I'm sure you can purchase your cake dummies (from Ebay) and cover your own cake with buttercream or fondant and save some money on the cake. Some cake baker also provide this service. The ones down here do.

I forgot to list the price for you lynnie11276. The banding is $5 per yard (per row). So if you want 4 rows, the cost is $20/yard. Each stone is about 5mm, so 4 rows is about a little over 3/4" wide (0.79 inch wide). I can probably fit about 5-7 yards of the 6-rows banding in the smallest USPS Priority One box, which is $4.95 for shipping.

The rhinestones are really beautiful.

do you still have some of the rhinestone bolt left that you made the cake stand out of? I love it! Please let me know how big your stand was and how much yardage you used to cover yours. One more question. how did you make the stand out of mirrors?Thanks, angelatejeda@sbcglobal.net

freckledangel..the stand we built was 24" square and 8" high. I can't remember the yardage that we used to cover it but it's probably close to 10 yards (24 rows of crystals). We ended up not building it with mirror but used wood instead and painted it white and then hot glued it.

I would love to buy some of the 24 row banding from you. Do you have any left? If not, you know it is expense on the internet. Have you found any secret web address or know where I could purchase some more. I am needing about 6 yards if it is 4 1/2 inches wide.

lebElaine...unfortunately, I don't have 6 yards left of the 24 rows. I only have about 4.5 yards. 24 rows is a little less than 5" wide. I was able to get it for a good deal b/c I knew someone who worked in the garment industry and was able to buy the bolt for a wholesale value.
