Life Changing Experiences
{{Laura My Love!}}

This post goes out to one of my favorite people. We haven't kept in touch nearly enough in the last couple of years, but she has had an enormous impact on my life and a wedding seems like the perfect opportunity to tell her that.

She taught me how to embrace life in all of it's ironic glory, broadened my horizons, pushed me to do things I may have never even known about without her....and MOST importantly

....Showed me how to throw a wicked party.

She accepts people for who they are and inspires them to explore who they can become. She taught me to seek out all the unconventional possibilities life has to offer and I admire that brave approach to life and new experiences.

I am a better person for having known her.

I think that a wedding should be about gathering together those people who have made a significant and positive change in your life. Those who have helped shape you into who you are and who will continue to support you in becoming the person you want to be. No amount of distance or insufficient communication will change the fact that she has done all of these things and unknowingly taught me how to do them for myself.

When I think of my wedding day, I think of her by my side. This post is intended to let her know the difference she has made in my life and also to ask her one very important question....

Laura March....WILL YOU BE MY BRIDESMAID?

{{ Mismatched Dishes }}

Hello Ladies!!

So most caterers include standard white dishes with their catering services, but in my ever increasing love for all things vintage wedding-beautiful I came up with the idea to mix china patterns.

I am trying to incorporate a lot of different ideas to involve our family in this process and in our day, so I asked my grandmothers what they thought of the idea. They were extremely excited about the idea of incorporating their dishes. What's more, they have been collected over generations of my family and a couple of them were actually given to my father's mother by his father for their anniversaries over the years. I will have to post their story at some point because theirs is the greatest romance I have ever known. I will consider myself exceedingly lucky to have even half the devotion in my relationship they had over the course of their 50 some odd years of marriage.

Another great place to find vintage and/or incomplete place settings for those whose grandparents don't hoard china is by scouring your local consignment shops and flea markets. We have a Savers store about 15 minutes from our house and the dishes are something like three for a dollar. Can't beat that! I'll post my finds if I have to supplement my family's "collections".

The thing I love about it aside from the family connections is that they look like beautiful ornate decor on the tables while being totally functional as well. It should help us save on decorating and who doesn't love that?

Anyway, I have a lot of memories connected to big family dinners on special occasions at my grandparents' houses and I think the rest of my extended family will love eating their meal off of dishes they recognize from those same holidays.

I saw one post about a bride who used mismatched tea cups at her shower both to drink tea out of (duh) and as her guest favors. She wrote messages on them with a gold marker/paint pen to each guest....I LOVE that but I will have to return mine after the wedding. However, tea cups can also be found at local consignment shops for pennies on the dollar, so it could DEFINITELY be a great resource for someone else.

{{ A Vision In Vintage }}
I have decided NOT to choose colors for our wedding. I tried that but so many others kept creeping into the picture. See my last few posts. BUT, there was a general theme and style across the board. SO instead of trying to center the style around exact colors, I have decided to stick to vintage romance as a theme.

Our venue is a big old mansion, set in beautiful Victorian gardens, and built in the early 1900's {see previous posts}. The house was seriously made for this theme. Since my style is usually a little 'vintagey' anyway, I guess I fit the house too :)

ALSO, instead of doing a traditional registry we will be registering for our honeymoon instead {more on that later}. SO I think I can work in some really interesting vintage travel accents <3

I want to collect pieces from various eras to mix and match the classic styles and romance of those times. I can spend days at a flea market and now I have an excuse to do it! For me, the more weathered and worn something is, the more character and charm it has, and the better story it will help me tell.

I am most at home around historic elements and whimsical details so it makes sense that they would play a part in one of the most important days in my life. I can't wait to spend it surrounded by the people and things that matter most to me!!

{{ What Now?? }}
Anyone who follows my blog knows that I have been heartbroken over an issue that came up with my photographer regarding our High-res photos. The bottom line is that she doesn't give them out unless you buy an album which is RIDICULOUSLY expensive ($1300-$5000). Beautiful, but even with the 50% discount she offered if I do the designing, it is just not in the current budget. Without that purchase we only receive the low-res images which can't be enlarged past 5x7 without them becoming grainy and pixelated.

My mom contacted a photographer friend of a friend because I wanted to find out what this was all about. He was wonderful and his response is below:

"So here's the deal - high res disks are the crux of us photog types. Some offer them, some don't. There are valid reasons for both. Essentially your daughter is paying for the photographer's time, both at the wedding and the hours of postprocessing that go in after the day. If the images are not part of the package, your daughter is either forced to buy the disk, or purchase the prints online, which is a big money maker. I would suggest she ask what typical prices are for those prints. If it's very high, the disk purchase may be worth it.

Here's my stance on giving away the disks. I don't give the images out in my basic packages for this reason: in a basic package there is no printed representation of my work. If I give the bride the disk, she can walk into a CVS or send them to shutterfly. I cannot guarantee the quality of those prints. Color may be wrong, cropping may be an issue etc. I can guarantee that all my prints come from a professional lab on the best paper with my edits. That being said, if the couple chooses to buy an album, gallery wrap or specialty print, I give them the high res disk as my work is represented how it should be. In all actuality, my clients typically buy prints from me anyway because they know how they're going to come out and it's super convenient (next day arrival).

I hope that helps. If your daughter hasn't signed a contract yet, maybe she can negotiate print price or adding the disk for a nominal fee. If she has any questions or needs any advice, please tell her she can call me at any point."

Like I said...SO nice, even if it wasn't exactly what I had hoped to hear, at least he validated her view point. But the real question is....

....WHAT DO I DO NOW?? Sooooo not into starting the photographer search ALL OVER AGAIN....

{{ HELP Please!! }}
High Resolution VS Low Resolution Photography
Obviously high res images are of superior quality. Most photographers I have spoken to offer the hi-res images on DVD as a part of their standard package. I looked into the difference between low and hi-res photos and it seems that as soon as you get past a 5x7 image it begins to pixelate and lose their original quality.

Do any of you have experience with this??

Is there a standard DPI/resolution for hi res and low res images?

Unfortunately, the photographer I have my heart set on says that she doesn't give out the hi-res pictures anymore because she once went to a client's house after the wedding and when she looked at the album the bride had printed the pictures had a green or blue cast to them. She says that because the place where the bride had them printed (possibly a Wal mart or a Walgreens according to her) wasn't equipped to print them, it resulted in the discoloration. She wants to ensure that her reputation for her work is preserved so that it is accurately represented in print form. She now only offers the high-res photos on DVD if you buy her album....This means that unless we order prints through her we won't have access to the best quality images and can't print larger than 5x7 on our own....

The thing is that my Fiancée works for a label printing company. As such he has access to a full Graphics Department and full time Proofer (person who ensures that all colors print perfectly). He also has access to professional grade graphic printers and specialized inks.

We told her this as well and she said she would talk to her boyfriend who runs the business side of things. Unfortunately they decided to include the hi-res images ONLY if we bought an album. She offered the album at a 50% discount if I do the design and send it to her to be printed through the company she uses. HOWEVER, her albums range from $1300 for a small album all the way up to $5000!!!! Even at a 50% discount I DO NOT want to spend that much money on something I feel like I'm already paying for...

Some of it doesn't really make sense to me. For example, even if I bought her album and she gave me the hi-res DVD, wouldn't I then have the potential to re-print them anywhere I chose, regardless of quality, thereby defeating her purpose of not providing them in the first place??

I REALLY want her to photograph our wedding, but I feel like this might be a deal breaker....

Daddy's Little Girl
Showing Him Your Dress????
I've been doing a fair amount of dress shopping lately and every time I try one on I can't help but consider the way my dad will react. I will probably wear a veil for the ceremony, not because I really want it, but so I can give my dad the experience of flipping it over my head to give me away.

My dad is extremely emotional and I KNOW without a shadow of a doubt that he will cry (several times) during the day, which means I will too. Is it weird to look forward to that?

I am a Daddy's Girl....although I think most women are on their wedding day. The only thing I'm unsure about is should I let my dad see pictures of the dress, come to a fitting, or wait until the day of to show him the dress?

SO, HOW and WHEN do you plan to show your dress to your fathers?
